Job summary

EMBS Group is seeking a Workshop Engineer for their Nottingham workshop to diagnose, repair and test electronic and electromechanical hardware used in public transport systems. The role splits time between bench repair and occasional on-site installations at depots and stops.

You will be responsible for PCB repairs, component-level troubleshooting, soldering, and using diagnostic equipment, with training provided and travel requirements across the UK.

Transport Technology - Workshop Engineer

Location: Nottingham, East Midlands

Overview

EMBS Talent is working in partnership with a global leader in intelligent transport technology, located in Nottingham, that is currently in the market for a Workshop Engineer to join their company on a permanent, full time basis.

Our client supplies IT, ticketing and fleet management systems for buses and trains. More than 1,100 transport operators across Europe, the Americas, Australia, New Zealand and Asia rely on their systems every day.

Your responsibilities will include:

As a Workshop Engineer, you will diagnose, repair, refurbish and test the electronic and electromechanical hardware that keeps public transport running, including on-board computers, driver touchscreen displays, ticket validators and ticket printers.

Based in the Nottingham repair workshop, you will carry out component-level PCB repairs, including through-hole and surface-mount work and IC replacement, and fix mechanical faults such as those in printer mechanisms. Around 80% of your time will be at the bench, with the remaining 20% on customer sites installing equipment and diagnosing faults on buses, trams and at tram stops.

Full product training is provided, including time at our client's international head office repair centre, with regular return visits to keep your skills sharp.

You will:

• Diagnose, repair and refurbish electronic hardware to component level, to agreed timescales
• Solder, desolder and rework PCBs, including through-hole, surface-mount and IC replacement
• Diagnose and repair electromechanical faults, including servicing and replacing ticket printer mechanisms
• Use diagnostic tools, test equipment and technical documentation to find faults and verify repairs
• Configure equipment and load approved operating software
• Complete functional testing before equipment returns to service
• Keep accurate records of faults, repairs, components used, serial numbers and test results
• Prepare quotations for chargeable repairs
• Install and troubleshoot equipment on buses, trams and stop infrastructure, supporting Field Service Engineers
• Carry out remote and on-site diagnostics and guide customers on equipment operation
• Support stock control, logistics and monthly stock audits
• Work safely, following workshop, site and ESD procedures

Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate:

• Proven experience diagnosing and repairing electronic equipment to component level
• Confident soldering, desoldering and PCB rework skills, including surface-mount IC replacement
• Experience using electronic diagnostic and test equipment
• Ability to read circuit diagrams and technical repair documentation
• A methodical approach to fault finding, with strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping
• Confidence with software installation, equipment configuration and Microsoft Office
• Good communication skills and a professional manner with customers
• Willingness to work hands-on in both workshop and customer environments, including depots and tram stops
• Full UK driving licence (essential, as driving to customer sites is part of the role)
• Willingness to travel within the UK and overseas for training
