Job summary

Laing O'Rourke is seeking a skilled Structural Welder/Fabricator in Northwich to join our production team. You will work in a BS EN 1090 certified facility, welding structural steel parts for modular buildings to high-quality standards.

Responsibilities include interpreting drawings, following welding procedures and safely using shop equipment. You will help meet production targets while maintaining safety and quality, with opportunities for progression.

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Fabrication and Welding or equivalent practical experience.
  • BS EN ISO 9606-1 MIG/MAG qualification or ability to pass test on start.
  • Experience working to BS EN 1090 standards.
  • Proven experience welding structural steel components.

Job description

Structural Welder/Fabricator.

We are looking for a skilled, motivated and safety-focused Structural Welder/Fabricator to join our production team making modular buildings and related structural products.

You will be working in a BS EN 1090 certified production facility, where you will be responsible for making and welding structural steel parts used in modular buildings. You will produce high-quality work following technical drawings, welding procedures and quality standards, whilst maintaining a strong focus on safety, efficiency and continuous improvement.

What You Will Be Doing
  • High-quality MIG/MAG welding to BS EN ISO 9606 standards.
  • Making steel structures and parts for modular buildings, including base frames, support structures and connection details.
  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings, welding symbols, general layout drawings and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
  • Carrying out making work including measuring, marking out, cutting, grinding, drilling and fitting steel components before welding.
  • Using production machinery and workshop equipment following company procedures and training.
  • Assembling steel structures according to approved technical drawings and specifications.
  • Completing welds to the correct dimensions and quality requirements using jigs, fixtures and freehand techniques where needed.
  • Meeting production targets whilst maintaining the correct quality and safety standards.
  • Helping to meet weekly production schedules and delivery deadlines.
  • Carrying out your own checks and assisting with visual inspection and testing processes, including visual testing (VT) and non-destructive testing (NDT) where required.
  • Keeping weld defects and rework to a minimum by following approved welding procedures and getting it right first time.
  • Completing production and quality records as required by the BS EN 1090 quality system.
  • Safely using overhead cranes, lifting equipment and related tools following company procedures and training.
  • Working with the rest of the production team to meet production and delivery goals.
  • Taking part in toolbox talks, safety briefings and ongoing skills training.
  • Keeping the workplace tidy and helping with 5S principles in the welding and making area.
  • Reporting defects, material shortages, equipment issues and quality concerns immediately to the Supervisor.
  • Supporting continuous improvement ideas across production, quality and safety processes.
Essential
What you will need
  • NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Fabrication and Welding, or similar practical experience.
  • Current BS EN ISO 9606-1 MIG/MAG qualification, or sufficient experience and ability to pass the qualification test when you start.
  • Experience working to BS EN 1090 standards.
  • Proven experience welding structural steel components.
  • Able to read and interpret technical and making drawings.
  • Good knowledge of welding safety requirements and quality standards.
  • Experience using making hand tools and workshop equipment.
Desirable
  • Experience in modular construction, offsite production or portable building settings.
  • Experience welding structural steel sections ranging from 3mm to 20mm thickness.
  • Experience using band saws, pedestal drills and making machinery.
  • Knowledge of welding quality records, including WPSs, WPQRs and weld maps.
  • Basic mechanical assembly or fitting skills.
  • Overhead crane, forklift or slinger/signaller certificate.
  • Experience working in a BS EN 1090 certified production setting.

Additional Information

This role requires physical fitness, manual dexterity and the ability to work safely within a manufacturing environment. The successful candidate must be capable of wearing all required personal protective equipment, including respiratory protective equipment (RPE) where necessary.

Occasional overtime and shift working may be required to support operational and customer requirements.
