Job description

The Weekend Live News Editor is a senior position responsible for delivering distinctive live coverage for the Times and Sunday Times app and website during peak traffic days, Saturday and Sunday.

They will ensure the quality of digital journalism by managing the homepage, editing live breaking news, and enhancing online copy, pictures, graphics, and videos. The role requires maintaining the aesthetic standards of the Times and Sunday Times.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  1. Managing the workflow for stories on the homepage, including publication timing and presentation.
  2. Overseeing content across sections and its placement on the homepage and section fronts.
  3. Using data and digital insights to guide decisions and craft effective headlines.
  4. Managing live blogs and coordinating with different desks.
  5. Presenting stories, performance metrics, and decisions in news conferences.
  6. Sending push notifications.
  7. Building productive relationships with news editors, planning editors, production editors, and the audience team.
  8. Collaborating with the planning editor to anticipate major stories.
  9. Working a three-day weekend schedule from Friday to Sunday, including long days on Saturday and Sunday.

Candidate requirements include:

  1. Experience as a digital news editor for a national newspaper or major digital news organization.
  2. Strong interest in news, current affairs, lifestyle, culture, and sports.
  3. Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines accurately.
  4. Persuasive presentation and interpersonal skills, with problem-solving capabilities.
  5. Effective communication skills.
  6. Understanding of social media platforms to engage audiences.
  7. Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
  8. Knowledge of editorial compliance and regulatory issues.
