Job summary

Canal & River Trust in London and the South East seeks a Waterway Operative to maintain canals, operate locks, and support visitors. This outdoor, hands-on role offers full training, a 37‑hour week on a seven‑day rota, and a 24‑hour standby schedule.

Based in Docklands with travel between sites, you will work with volunteers and ensure safety and high-quality repairs. Joining the Trust provides opportunities for progression, a supportive team, and active community engagement in a scenic urban

Qualifications

• Attention to detail with high-quality workmanship.
• Excellent communication and customer service, as the face of the Trust.
• Basic literacy and numeracy.
• Experience in manual, construction, or outdoor environments advantageous.
• Ability to follow schedules and plans.
• Basic IT skills and comfort with mobile devices.
• Full and current UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Carry out outdoor maintenance and repair of canal infrastructure.
• Operate locks, bridges, and other waterway assets safely.
• Improve towpaths and waterside areas, including litter removal.
• Deliver excellent customer service to visitors and boaters.
• Work collaboratively with volunteers to achieve high-quality results.
• Plan and prepare tasks with correct tools and materials.
• Uphold Canal & River Trust values in all activities.
