Job summary

Balfour Beatty VINCI is recruiting for an environmental specialist to work on the HS2 project in the Central Region, Birmingham. You will support groundwater monitoring, risk assessments, and environmental management across assigned Sublots.

Flexibility in working arrangements is welcome, with a focus on collaborative problem solving, data handling, and compliance with environmental legislation as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering major infrastructure in the Midlands.

Qualifications

• Relevant degree or experience in geology, geography or environmental science.
• Higher degree in contaminated land, engineering geology, environmental science or hydrogeology desirable.
• Good IT skills and confident with Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Full driving licence.
• Understanding of environmental legislation and environmental management systems.

Responsibilities

• Instrumental in producing quarterly reports for consents and ensuring documents are compliant.
• Collaborate with environmental and sustainability teams to deliver monitoring plans.
• Review required consented and permitted monitoring and data.
• Liaise with sublot Water Specialist / Environment Managers during incident responses.
• Provide specialist input into site-specific monitoring plans and groundwater risk assessments.
• Coordinate with sub-contractors to ensure groundwater monitoring requirements are met.

Job description

HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Location

Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).

• Instrumental in the production of Quarterly Reports for Consents.
• Work with BC ensure all document are compliant and uploaded to BC and EB.
• Work with the environmental and sustainability team to deliver documents (Quarterly Reports, Ground water Risk Assessment, Acrylamide Use, Monitoring Plans).
• Reviewing of required consented and permitted monitoring.
• QA/QC of data collection and documents.
• Submission of water monitoring data to BBV (Sublot Environmental Teams and Water specialist) and Stakeholders (the Environmental Agency. DJV, and HS2)
• Liaising with sublot Water Specialist / Environment Managers during incident responses
• Specialist input into site specific monitoring plans
• Specialist input into site specific groundwater risk assessments
• Liaising with specialist teams for drilling new monitoring wells.
• Liaising with sub-contractors to ensure GW monitoring requirements are met and for installation and maintenance of still wells.
• Undertaking other reasonable duties appropriate to the role and in support of the wider environment / water team
• Relevant degree or experience e.g. geology, geography, or environmental science.
• A higher degree in contaminated land, engineering geology, environmental science, hydrogeology or similar, is desirable.
• Understanding of the benefits of working collaboratively to problem solve and obtain the best outcome.
• Good IT skills and confident in the use of Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
• Full driving licence.
• Confidence with excel/data.
• An understanding of environmental legislation and principles of environmental management systems 140001; ability to work as part of the team to ensure compliance
