Job summary

North Yorkshire Council in Skipton invites applications for a Driver position within the Highways sector. The role is safety critical, requires a clean driving licence and a commitment to high standards of customer service and teamwork.

You will work with the collection crews, follow instruction, and perform routine checks, including winter duties such as snow clearance. The salary ranges £25,614–£26,847 per year, with a closing date of 13 September 2026 and interview date TBC.

Qualifications

  • Ability to follow instruction and carry out tasks in line with direction.
  • Knowledge of safe working practices and general Health and Safety principles.
  • Experience of working in an outdoor environment.
  • Ability to assess hazards and risks in real time and communicate the appropriate warnings/action required to prevent accidents and incidents.
  • Willing to work outside of normal working hours reflecting the requirements of the Service.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the health and safety of self and colleagues, ensuring that all safe working practices are followed, including wearing PPE.
  • Support the driver in undertaking dynamic risk assessments and act as Reversing Assistant to ensure safe manoeuvres.
  • Complete daily allocated tasks and assist with collections, including receptacle emptying and customer service.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, management and public to maintain high service standards.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure services are completed and adapt to external factors such as breakdowns or blockages.
  • Perform wider public realm duties including cleansing, litter picking, snow clearing and gritting when required.
