Job summary

Magnox (NRS) at Trawsfynydd is seeking a technically skilled waste management specialist to support decommissioning programmes, providing expert advice on waste classification, regulatory compliance and environmental controls.

You will lead waste characterisation activities, prepare information for disposal routes, implement data systems, and influence design decisions to minimise waste while ensuring safety and regulatory standards are met.

Job description

Do you want to help shape how complex radioactive waste is managed safely and compliantly? This role places you at the heart of major decommissioning activity, where your judgement, knowledge, and advice will directly influence programme delivery and long-term site outcomes.

We’re looking for someone who wants to make a meaningful impact at Trawsfynydd site, an evolving decommissioning site entering an exciting phase, with multiple decommissioning, deplanting, and demolition projects progressing simultaneously. You’ll join a supportive and collaborative waste team, contributing the radiological, waste, and environmental insight needed to deliver safe, compliant, and efficient operation.

With a four-day working week from Monday to Thursday, it’s a role that offers both challenge and balance.

What will you be doing:

You’ll play a key technical role in supporting decommissioning programmes, providing specialist advice on waste management, radioactive waste compliance and transport legislation. Your expertise will inform critical decisions throughout the waste lifecycle, ensuring waste is characterised, assessed, tracked and consigned safely, compliantly and in accordance with regulatory requirements.

A significant aspect of the role will involve undertaking waste activity assessments to support waste classification, treatment and disposal route selection. You'll lead and contribute to waste characterisation activities, preparing Waste Characterisation Information (WCI) for disposal facilities, and working closely with project teams, radiological protection personnel and waste management specialists to develop robust waste records and underpin disposal route justifications.

You will also support the implementation and use of the Waste Information Management System (WIMS), ensuring waste data is accurately captured, maintained and tracked throughout the waste lifecycle. Using WIMS and other waste management tools, you’ll help improve data quality, inventory management and regulatory reporting across the site.

Alongside this, you’ll provide technical support to a wide range of projects, from concept and design through to operational delivery. You'll help define waste management requirements at an early stage, influence design decisions to minimise waste generation and ensure compliance with environmental permitting and waste acceptance criteria.

Key areas you’ll influence:

• Advising on waste and dangerous goods legislation for decommissioning activities.
• Leading Best Available Technique assessments to reduce waste generation and environmental impact.
• Providing clear technical guidance to project teams and relay the clear expectations of waste management.
• Provide technical support to current and future project design and implementation.
• Commit to continuous improvement of waste programmes/strategies.
• Supporting the safe consignment of radioactive and non-active wastes from site.

Who are we looking for:

You’ll bring strong technical knowledge of nuclear waste management, waste characterisation and environmental compliance within a highly regulated environment. You will have practical experience supporting waste operations and developing waste inventories, with a sound understanding of waste classification methodologies, characterisation requirements and disposal route selection.

You’ll be confident interpreting regulatory requirements, analysing technical data and providing pragmatic solutions to complex waste management challenges. Strong stakeholder engagement skills are essential, as you'll routinely work with project teams, waste specialists, regulators and contractors.

You will need:

Essential:

• An HNC or equivalent qualification in a scientific, engineering or environmental discipline.
• Strong knowledge of environmental and waste-related legislation, including radioactive and controlled wastes.
• Experience in nuclear waste management and working within regulated environments.

It would be advantageous to:

• Hold, or demonstrate a willingness to work towards obtaining, relevant authorisations such as SMLO, DGTO, ASQEP‑W, and NRE.
• Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor certification and experience developing waste inventories.
• Experience developing and maintaining radioactive waste inventories.
• Experience carrying out activity assessments, producing Waste Characterisation Information (WCI), and involvement in the wider characterisation process.
