Job summary

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking a Vehicle Technician to join the Fleet Division on a full-time, permanent basis at the Cradley Heath depot. You will service and repair a wide range of vehicles to ensure safe, compliant operations for internal and external services.

The role requires Level 3 NVQ Automotive Maintenance and Repair and an LGV licence (B accepted with training to C within 12 months). You will work across diverse fleet types and mentor apprentices to develop the team.

Qualifications

  • Level 3 NVQ in Automotive Maintenance and Repair required.
  • LGV Class 2 licence; category C training within 12 months if only B is held.
  • Experience with maintenance, inspection and repair of a diverse fleet.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out servicing, maintenance and repairs on vehicles and plant equipment.
  • Prepare vehicles for DVSA MOT testing and inspections.
  • Diagnose faults across engine, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Perform welding, fabrication and bodywork repairs as needed.
  • Attend roadside breakdowns and provide recovery support.
  • Mentor and train apprentices and junior team members.

Grade/Salary: Band F, SCP 26-31 (£37,280 - £41,771 per annum) + Shift Allowance £3,636.30

Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent

Working Pattern: 37 Hours, alternating shift pattern

Sandwell Council’s Fleet Division is seeking a experienced Vehicle Technician to join its team on a full-time, permanent basis.

As a Vehicle Technician, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the Sandwell MBC’s diverse fleet. Based at our central depot, you’ll maintain a wide range of vehicles and equipment that support essential in-house and external services such as housing repairs, grounds maintenance, highways operations, household waste collections and street cleansing.

About The Role
  • Carry out scheduled servicing, maintenance, and repairs on a variety of vehicles and plant equipment, including engines, transmissions, suspension, brakes, chassis, and electrical systems.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections and prepare vehicles for MOT testing in accordance with DVSA standards and regulations.
  • Diagnose and rectify faults across engine management, fuel, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems using advanced diagnostic equipment.
  • Undertake welding, fabrication, and bodywork repairs within workshop capabilities.
  • Attend roadside breakdowns and provide recovery support, ensuring all work is completed safely and in compliance with relevant procedures.
  • Support, mentor, and assist in the training and development of apprentices and junior team members.
About You
  • Level 3 NVQ Automotive Maintenance and Repair LGV Class 2 Category C Licence – Candidates will be accepted with a category B licence and provided training in order to obtain the required category C licence in 12-months.
  • Experience of conducting maintenance, inspection, repair and test services for a diverse fleet including vehicles such as light vehicle van/Tipper's, Small Plant machines, Sweepers, and Large Refuse Vehicles.
