Job summary

BEAR Scotland is seeking an Installation Operative for the Vehicle Restraint System squad. You will carry out repairs, install upgraded VRS, and support the team across the North West Trunk Road Unit region, including Perth and Dundee. Training can be provided for progression.

The role requires LGV Class 2 (HGV2), NHSS 12D, and plant handling qualifications, plus a valid UK driving licence and flexibility for shifts and travel.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a Roadworker undertaking a range of road maintenance operations.
  • Flexibility for shift work.
  • Willingness to undertake training to progress to the next level of the role.

Responsibilities

  • Erect and remove temporary and permanent crash barriers and traffic management signs.
  • Install and fix temporary/permanent road furniture.
  • Operate power tools, small plant and machinery.
  • Drive vehicles including those with attachments such as tractors.
  • Support specialist VRS team members and ensure safety of the public and colleagues.
  • Participate in standby and winter maintenance rota.

Involvement in the Winter Maintenance RotaBEAR Scotland is a leading provider of highway maintenance services across Scotland. We manage and maintain over 2,000km of Scotland’s trunk road network, tackling just about every imaginable task and working round the clock to help keep Scotland moving.The North West Trunk Road Unit spans some 1,422km of trunk road through some of the most scenic parts of the country. It covers a huge area of Scotland, from Thurso and Wick in the very north of the Highlands down to Campbeltown in Argyll and Bute, from Uig on Skye to Perth and Stirling.We are looking for enthusiastic Individuals to join our ever expanding Vehicle Restraint System squad carrying out repairs to damaged systems and Installing new upgraded VRS Systems. As this is an ever expanding team all levels of experience shall be considered and full training available also.The Installation Operative, reporting into the Special Projects Manager, should be an experienced roadworker with the necessary skills to carry out various road maintenance operations, training can be provided if necessary. Ideally you should have, as a minimum, an LGV Class 2 Licence (HGV2), NHSS 12D, Excavator below 10T, Lorry Loader and slinger signaller.This is a full time role and a driving licence is essential.

Role includes: The erection and removal of temporary and permanent crash barriers, as well as traffic management signsInstallation and fixing of temporary/permanent road furnitureOperation of power tools, small plant and machineryDriving vehicles including those with simple attachments such as tractorsProvide support for specialist VRS team membersResponsibility for the health and safety of the public, colleagues and yourselfParticipating in standby and winter maintenance rotaWinter maintenance duties which include fitting gritter body and blade, driving gritter and spread salt by hand if required

Knowledge, Skills and Experience: Experience as a Roadworker with the skills to undertake a range of road maintenance operationsFlexibility for shift workThere is a requirement to undertake training and to achieve competence in aspects of the current job as well as preparing oneself to progress to the next level of jobIdeally hold the following (as a minimum) – LGV Class 2 Licence (HGV2) / NHSS 12/ Excavator (below 10 tonnes) / Lorry Loader/ Slinger/SignallerAchievement of the H&S CLSA 34X and CITB H&S touch screen testsExperience of using small plantHolding tickets for plant, traffic management, Health & Safety, an advantageValid UK Driving Licence –Flexibility for shift work
