About the Vehicle Maintenance Fitter Opportunity
Our client, a well-established and highly respected manufacturing business, is seeking an experienced Vehicle Maintenance Fitter to join their maintenance team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled fitter with experience working on commercial vehicles, mobile plant, trailers, or industrial equipment. As a Vehicle Maintenance Fitter, you'll play a vital role in ensuring the company's fleet and operational plant are maintained to the highest standards of safety, compliance, and reliability.
Working in a busy industrial environment, you'll carry out servicing, maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and inspections to keep vehicles and equipment operating efficiently while minimising downtime.
Vehicle Maintenance Fitter Responsibilities
- Carry out routine servicing, preventative maintenance, and safety inspections
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and braking system faults
- Complete repairs and component replacements on vehicles, trailers, mobile plant, and associated equipment
- Prepare vehicles and equipment for MOTs, plating, and statutory inspections
- Investigate and resolve driver-reported defects and breakdowns
- Attend breakdowns and support recovery activities when required
- Undertake fabrication, fitting, welding, cutting, and grinding work where competent
- Use diagnostic equipment, workshop tools, lifting equipment, and specialist machinery safely
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and job documentation
- Help maintain a clean, organised, and safe workshop environment
- Identify recurring faults and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
- Work closely with colleagues, drivers, supervisors, and suppliers to minimise downtime
What We’re Looking for in a Vehicle Maintenance Fitter
Essential Skills & Experience
- Relevant Vehicle Maintenance, Plant Maintenance, Mechanical Engineering, or Heavy Vehicle qualification (Level 3 preferred)
- Previous experience maintaining and repairing commercial vehicles, industrial vehicles, mobile plant, trailers, or similar equipment
- Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and braking systems
- Ability to fault-find, diagnose issues, and carry out effective repairs
- Knowledge of vehicle maintenance compliance and roadworthiness standards
- Experience using diagnostic equipment and workshop machinery
- Strong commitment to health and safety
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively
- Good communication and teamwork skills
Desirable
- Full UK Driving Licence
- HGV Licence
- Forklift, MEWP, or other plant operation certifications
- Welding and fabrication experience
- Experience within manufacturing, recycling, heavy industry, or industrial environments
