Job summary

Tameside Council is seeking a qualified HGV/light vehicle mechanic to maintain and repair a large fleet at Tame Street, Stalybridge. You will perform routine maintenance, diagnostics and repairs to ensure fleet reliability.

Applicants should hold NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance (or City & Guilds), possess a Class B licence, and have experience diagnosing faults. LGV C is desirable; the role is 36 hours per week with additional contracted hours in Nov–Mar.

Qualifications

• Possession of Class B driving licence.
• Experience diagnosing faults and repairing municipal vehicles/plant.

Responsibilities

• Carry out routine maintenance, testing, diagnostics and repairs for a large fleet of HGVs, light vehicles, plant and equipment.
• Work as part of a team of vehicle/plant fitters with support from a manager.
• Demonstrate knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems and health and safety in a large workshop.

Job description

Salary: Grade G SCP 23 £34,434 - SCP 28 £39,152 plus pension, continuing training and tool allowance.

Base Location: Tame Street Garage, Stalybridge

Assessment Date: To be arranged

Contract Type: Permanent

Hours Per Week: 36 hours plus additional contracted hours during November to March.

The Role

Based at Tame Street, Stalybridge, you will be an enthusiastic and talented HGV/light vehicle mechanic with the drive to keep our Transport Fleet on the move.

This is an opportunity to utilise, and further develop your existing skills carrying out routine maintenance, testing, diagnostic and repair work to our large fleet of HGV’s, light vehicles, plant and specialist equipment. You will be joining a team of vehicle/plant fitters and have a manager who is supportive and keen to facilitate your development.

You should be organised, have good written and oral communication skills, be customer focused, hold a current driving licence (LGV Category C desirable) and trained to NVQ Level 3/City & Guilds (or equivalent) in a Heavy Vehicle Maintenance/Repair discipline.

Please note that this is a physically demanding role requiring a good level of fitness. Candidates must be capable of undertaking manual tasks, working in all weather conditions. The nature of the duties means that physical resilience and mobility are essential to perform the role safely and effectively.

About You

• Literate and Numerate
• NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and repair (Heavy Vehicle) / or City Guilds Certificate or equivalent
• Posession of a Class B driving licence.
• Previous experience in the diagnosis of faults, repairs and maintenance of municipal vehicles/plant and equipment’s.
• Good working knowledge of hydraulic systems.
• Good working knowledge/skills in the diagnosis of faults and repairs of electrical systems.
• The ability to demonstrate a good understanding of Operator Licensing requirements and undertakings.
• Experience in the use of computer based diagnostic equipment.
• The ability to demonstrate a good understanding of Health and Safety requirements and regulations, relating to large automotive workshops
• Proven experience of working within a large workshop environment.
• The ability to work on own initiative and with minimal supervision.
• The ability to work at height.
• Possession of comprehensive set of tooling relevant to vehicle maintenance
