Job summary

Fujifilm Biotechnologies in Billingham is recruiting a Research Scientist to develop, evaluate, and characterize upstream microbial processes for target molecules. You will execute experiments, ensure data quality, and support tech transfer and reporting across the Process Development organization.

The role emphasizes cGMP awareness, EHS compliance, and collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams to drive project decisions and impactful biotherapeutic development.

Qualifications

• A relevant degree (e.g., Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemical/Bioprocess Engineering, Biotechnology) or 3+ years of relevant experience.
• Hands-on experience in microbial upstream operations (e.g., shake flasks, bioreactors/fermenters, media/feed prep, aseptic technique).
• Familiarity with process development workflows, data recording, and documentation to quality standards.
• Working knowledge of cGMP principles and strong EHS mindset.
• Clear, concise communication skills; ability to collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams and present results.
• Experience supporting tech transfer between development and manufacturing or across sites.

Responsibilities

• Execute experimental programs with guidance to develop, evaluate, and characterize upstream microbial processes for target molecules.
• Generate high-quality data; perform analytical assessments and basic characterization aligned with project goals.
• Maintain rigorous, compliant documentation of experiments per PD quality procedures.
• Support technology transfer across sites and departments, following defined requirements and workflows.
• Prepare and contribute to internal/external reports, presentations, and project updates.
• Operate to cGMP expectations where applicable and uphold EHS policies and safe working practices.
• Collaborate in cross-functional teams and support the project lead with interdepartmental interactions.
