Job description

Open Bionics specialises in manufacturing and fitting upper limb prosthetics. We have 12 qualified prosthetists within our team across 3 different countries, providing clinical services and supporting our research and development projects. Open Bionics pioneered the use of 3D printing and 3D scanning within the P&O industry, and led a movement towards making prosthetics “look cool” - like glasses frames - rather than trying to hide the fact that a person has a limb difference. We have just launched the second generation of our bionic hand products, which are breaking new ground with an integrated battery, wireless EMG control and a standard wrist connector.

Role Specification:

Role Type: Permanent, Full Time

Location: 1 day per week in the Bristol, UK office, 2 days per week “on the road within the UK”, 1-2 days per week from home. Ideal home location would be in the midlands, within 2 hours drive from most major cities in England, but any candidate willing to commit to the schedule above will be considered.

Closing Date: Ongoing until recruited, we reserve the right to close vacancies upon sufficient application numbers, so please do get your application in as soon as possible

Salary: £57,000 + Company car and other benefits

We are looking for a highly passionate individual who believes that innovative prosthetic solutions can enhance users’ quality of life. As our Upper Limb Prosthetist, your goal is to deliver state-of-the-art prostheses and services to clinical partners and users of our cutting-edge assistive technology.

The role will be split between delivering prosthetic care to our private patients (20%), and educating and supporting NHS prosthetics centres on our products and solutions (80%).

You will have 1 direct-report upon commencing the role, and you will be reporting directly to the managing director for the EMEA region.

You will be responsible for running our UK clinical site, serving an installed patient base of over 200 patients, with an expectation of seeing around 1 patient per week on average. We specialise in upper limb prosthetics, so all of these will be upper limb patients. You will be responsible for growing our UK presence within NHS clinics. You will manage relationships with NHS prosthetists, occupational therapists, clinical managers and other staff, providing high quality support via face to face meetings and phonecalls.

You will be responsible for providing clinical perspective and insight that lead to enhancements to existing products, and strategic growth into new product segments. You will provide regular product feedback to our engineering and design team. You will already have the highest standards of customer service along with the potential to specialise in upper limb prosthetics, as you will eventually be expected to manage your own clinic. You will ultimately command an excellent understanding of our products and become an ambassador for the company. As this is a high responsibility level position, you should be serious about applying and have the drive and passion to lead the industry forward with new ideas. You will approach your clinical work with a business owner’s mindset, optimizing for great patient experiences and workflow efficiencies.

Key responsibilities:

Responsible for delivering the highest standard of clinical services to Open Bionics customers in accordance with our core values.

Providing training and ongoing support for patients on using their upper limb prosthesis to achieve certain activities of daily living and personal goals.

Educating and certifying prosthetic care providers on the fitting process for Open Bionics products.

Tracking performance via customer feedback, metrics and data from our ERP system to make smart decisions for growth.

Reviewing potential users’ eligibility and supporting trials with clinical partners.

Coordinating clinical input to ease the adoption rate, prescription and funding application of our products.

Providing internal clinical input to Open Bionics developers on product development on both hardware and software products. Testing new versions or products considering the expected clinical benefits for both clinicians and users. Contributing to create and maintain documentation for clinicians and end-users.

Active participation in relevant consumer or trade shows, exhibitions and conferences including supporting booth activities, workshops and communications.

Contribution to clinical research projects/publications aiming to reinforce the clinical value and benefits of the solutions developed by Open Bionics.

Taking an active role in research and development projects of new technologies that aid clinicians.

Providing a patient-centered approach to upper limb prosthetic rehabilitation and continuous support to our patients.

Travelling to meet patients and visit clinics across the country.

Person Scorecard:

Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist who has 3 - 5 years minimum experience in the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics. Previous experience in delivering prosthetic solutions for persons with upper limb absence (including myoelectric/multiarticulating/bionic componentry) would be advantageous.

Registration with HCPC.

Evidence-based practice approach to patient care with a demonstrable understanding of Open Bionics’ vision.

Proficient with methods of shape capture and rectification (experience with 3D scanning technologies and digital rectification platforms is preferred).

Ability to outline an appropriate prosthetic prescription for those upper limb absence and evidence of creative problem solving.

Passionate about making high-end prosthetics solutions more accessible for end-users. We are looking for someone who believes in this mission. Missionaries not mercenaries.
