Job summary

The Royal Ballet School is seeking a UK Scholars Level 1 ballet teacher for students aged 11–12 at White Lodge, Richmond Park. You will support and nurture students’ physical and mental wellbeing while delivering high-quality training aligned with the School’s training system.

The role focuses on creating structured lessons, student progress reporting, and collaboration with families and the Artistic Lead. This is a fixed-term weekend placement with safeguarding responsibilities and development

Our full-time students are based at White Lodge in Richmond Park and Upper School in Covent Garden.

There are two additional boarding houses for Upper School students in Pimlico and Covent Garden.

The Royal Ballet School operates in locations worldwide, including different Associate centres and venues for Intensive Courses.

RATE OF PAY: £41.25 per hour

HOURS: Saturday and Sunday, between 10.00 - 13.00, on the following dates:

Autumn Term 3 October and 4 October 24 October and 25 October 14 November and 15 November

Summer Term 1 May and 2 May 22 May and 23 May 19 June and 20 June

Spring Term 23 January and 24 January 13 February and 14 February 6 March and 7 March

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

UK Scholars Level 1 establishes the foundational architecture of classical ballet training while nurturing creativity, musicality, performance awareness, and holistic development. The programme is fully aligned with The Royal Ballet School System of Training and designed to ensure continuity, progression, and long-term dancer wellbeing.

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE

The post holder will teach ballet to UK Scholar students aged between 11 and 12 at The Royal Ballet School, White Lodge. A UK Scholars teacher understands the interests of the individual students are paramount and supports and nurtures the student’s physical and mental wellbeing whilst providing a high standard of ballet training.

MAIN DUTIES

This list should be seen as illustrative rather than prescriptive;

  • Structure and teach ballet lessons following the UK Scholars System of Training as set out by the School
  • Prepare lessons plans with clear learning objectives and outcomes
  • Attend termly online meetings, discuss students and programme updates
  • Maintain appropriate staff/student relationships
  • Communicate with parents of students as requested by the Artistic Lead of the UK Scholars Programme and UK Scholars Programme Coordinator
  • Record notes on all parent contact conversations
  • Produce written reports and deliver tutorials that support and communicate student progress effectively
  • Respecting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Use technology to support the delivery of classes and training
  • Attend Continuing Professional Development days as required by the Artistic Lead of the UK Scholars
  • Any other duties as may reasonably be required and that fall within the scope and range of the job.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
  • Experience of teaching ballet to students aged 11 to 12 years
  • A dance teaching qualification endorsed by a recognised educational body
  • Openness and willingness to develop and evolve as a teacher
  • Openness and willingness to adapt to new teaching methodology as and when introduced
  • A commitment to the aims and objectives of The Royal Ballet School and the UK Scholars Programme
  • An ability and willingness to maintain appropriate staff/student relationships
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to build professional supportive relationships with students, colleagues and the wider dance community
  • Able to produce concise written reports for parent, student and UK Scholars Management
  • First aid training or the willingness to attend training courses
  • Commitment to attending and completing essential Safeguarding Training
  • Empathy and a commitment to the values and ethos of the School.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
  • Experience of teaching ballet teaching to students in a pre-vocational and vocational school
  • Previous professional performing career.
