Job summary

Prospero Teaching is recruiting a Functional Skills Tutor to teach English and Maths (Entry Level 3 to Level 2) in Newton Aycliffe and surrounding Tyne and Wear areas. Sessions are face-to-face, often in community venues or the learner’s home, with bespoke programmes to build confidence and achieve qualifications.

Role based in Newton Aycliffe, with up to 15 hours per week per student, and start date in October 2026.

Qualifications

• Previous experience with functional skills.
• Right to work in the UK.
• DBS enhanced check with Online Update Service or willingness to apply.
• Able to reference last two years of education/employment.

Responsibilities

• Deliver one-to-one or small group tuition in Functional Skills Maths and/or English.
• Develop and implement personalised lesson plans addressing learning gaps.
• Monitor student progress and provide regular feedback to students and their families.
• Create a supportive and motivating learning environment to rebuild confidence in learning.
• Complete daily attendance and weekly reports.

Functional Skills Tutor - English & Maths - Newton Aycliffe

Prospero Teaching is working in partnership with local councils, SEND services, and education providers across Newton Aycliffe and the wider Tyne and Wear area to deliver high-quality, tailored one-to-one and small group Functional Skills support.

We are currently looking for experienced Functional Skills Tutors to teach English and Maths at Entry Level 3, Level 1, and Level 2.

About the Role

We're seeking dedicated and passionate Functional Skills Tutors based in Newton Aycliffe to work with young people who are currently not in full-time education.

Tutoring sessions are delivered face-to-face, typically within community venues, alternative provision settings, or in the learner's home environment. Each programme is bespoke to meet the learner's specific needs, helping them build confidence and achieve their Functional Skills English and Maths qualifications.

Position Details:

• Pay rate up to 30 per hour depending on qualification and/or experience
• Up to 15 hours per week per student
• Start date: October 2026
• Location: Newton Aycliffe
• Duration: ongoing

To be eligible for this role, the potential Functional Skills Tutors must:

• Previous experience with functional skills
• Hold the right to work in the UK
• Hold an enhanced child barred list DBS certificate registered with the online update service or be willing to process a new application
• Be able to reference the last two years of education/employment
