Job summary

Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking an experienced Surgical First Assistant to join the Trauma and Orthopaedic Team. The role involves perioperative support, coordinating theatre sessions and providing high-quality patient-centred care with flexibility for evenings and weekends.

Candidates must have an Enhanced DBS, and a Nursing/ODP background with appropriate surgical qualifications. The post is full-time, AfC Band 7, across MWL sites.

Qualifications

• Essential: Registered General Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner; Surgical First Assistant Course; degree level or equivalent theatre experience; evidence of continued professional development.
• Desirable: Mentorship Course; Leadership Course; Advanced/Intermediate Life Support Training; Enhanced Orthopaedic Surgical Skills course or working towards.

Responsibilities

• Assist in all aspects of Trauma and Orthopaedics and provide perioperative expertise as Surgical First Assistant, ensuring evidence-based patient-centred care.
• Coordinate and support the Trauma and Orthopaedic operating sessions by liaising with theatre staff to maintain safe patient care during procedures.
• Role includes evening and potentially weekend work and assisting on theatre lists across MWL Hospital sites.
