Job summary

Derbyshire County Council is seeking a Transport Planner Technician to join the Transport Development Management Team in Derbyshire. You will support as part of a team assessing highway impacts of new development and responding to consultations, while working closely with planning authorities and stakeholders to provide robust highways input.

The role involves site visits, prioritising workload, and delivering high-quality work within statutory deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Requires a technical engineering, transport planning or geographical qualification or relevant experience.
  • An Ordinary Certificate in Civil Engineering, Level 4 Highways/Civil Engineering apprenticeship or equivalent is advantageous.
  • Membership of CIHT, TPS, CILT or ICE beneficial.
  • General knowledge of planning system and related legislation beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and respond to consultations on planning applications focusing on highway safety, access and parking.
  • Provide highways and transport input to planning authorities during development processes.
  • Liaise with planning officers, consultants and members of the public.
  • Undertake site visits to inform assessments.
  • Support Transport Planners in managing workload and delivering high-quality work within statutory deadlines.
  • Travel throughout Derbyshire as required.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Transport Planner Technician to join our Transport Development Management Team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience or on the start of their journey developing a career in highways, transport planning or development management to join a supportive and experienced team and play an important role in considering the transport and highway impacts of new development across Derbyshire.

About The Role

As a Transport Planner Technician, you will work alongside experienced Transport Planners and Senior Transport Planners, supporting the County Council in its role as a Local Highway Authority.

A key part of the role will involve assessing and responding to consultations on smaller-scale planning applications, considering matters such as highway safety, access, parking and the wider transport implications of proposed development.

You will also work closely with Derbyshire's Local Planning Authorities responding to queries and providing appropriate highways and transport input as part of the planning process.

The role will involve regular liaison with planning officers, , consultants and members of the public. You will also undertake site visits where necessary to help inform your assessment of development proposals.

You will be joining a team dealing with a varied workload across Derbyshire, providing an excellent opportunity to develop your knowledge and experience of transport d development management.

About You
  • Has experience of working within a Highway Authority or similar organisation and some experience of considering highway design and standards.
  • Has an awareness of transport development management techniques and procedures.
  • Has knowledge of highway engineering and design.
  • Can communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a range of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Can manage and prioritise their own workload, use their initiative and deliver high quality work within statutory deadlines.
  • Is confident using electronic systems to record, retrieve, assess and process information.
  • Works well as part of a team while also being capable of working independently.
  • Can build effective working relationships with colleagues, Local Planning Authorities, developers, applicants and other stakeholders.
  • Is willing and able to travel throughout Derbyshire where required.

You should have a technical engineering, transport planning or geographical qualification and/or relevant experience within Transport Development Management or a similar role.

An Ordinary Certificate in Civil Engineering, Level 4 Apprenticeship in Highways/Civil Engineering or another appropriate qualification would be advantageous, as would membership of a relevant professional body such as CIHT, TPS, CILT or ICE.

General knowledge of the planning system and associated legislation would also be beneficial.
