Job summary

Jewson is seeking a Transport Allocator for its Wimborne site to coordinate, allocate and optimise the daily delivery network. You will ensure orders are delivered safely, efficiently and cost-effectively while maximising vehicle capacity and adhering to transport legislation.

You will work 7am-4.30pm Mon-Fri with alternate Saturdays, collaborating with branches, drivers and transport colleagues to maintain OTIF performance and accurate reporting.

Qualifications

  • Experience in transport planning, logistics coordination or fleet scheduling.
  • Good knowledge of routes and geographical area.
  • Understanding of transport legislation and Operator Licence requirements.
  • Excellent organisational skills with ability to prioritise in a fast-paced environment.

Jewson are looking for a Transport Allocator to join the supportive and successful team at their Wimborne site.

Overall Purpose Of Role

To coordinate, allocate and optimise the day-to-day delivery network across the Cluster, ensuring customer orders are delivered safely, efficiently and cost-effectively. The role supports operational excellence through effective transport planning, resource utilisation, compliance monitoring and proactive communication with branches, drivers and transport colleagues.

The Transport Allocator plays a key role in delivering excellent customer service by maximising vehicle capacity, maintaining compliance with transport legislation and Operator Licence requirements, and supporting continuous improvement across transport operations.

Working Hours

7am-4.30pm Mon-Fri, and every other Sat 8am-12pm

Key Responsibilities
  • Allocate and plan customer deliveries to ensure delivery commitments and service levels are achieved.
  • Maximise fleet utilisation and delivery capacity while maintaining operational efficiency.
  • Work closely with branches to understand customer requirements and manage changing priorities.
  • Proactively identify and resolve delivery issues before they impact customers.
  • Support the achievement of OTIF (On Time In Full) performance targets.
  • Communicate effectively with drivers, branch teams and transport colleagues to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Produce efficient daily delivery schedules and vehicle allocations.
  • Plan branch transfers, stock movements and inter-branch deliveries in the most cost-effective manner.
  • Monitor fleet capacity and recommend opportunities to improve utilisation.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance delivery performance and transport efficiency.
  • Assist with analysis of failed, delayed or compromised deliveries and identify corrective actions.
  • Ensure transport operations are conducted in accordance with Operator Licence requirements and relevant legislation.
  • Maintain accurate records and support transport compliance audits.
  • Collaborate with neighbouring clusters and transport teams to optimise resource availability and customer outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate information across all transport systems, databases and reporting tools.
  • Produce and support reporting on transport KPIs and operational performance.
  • Support the Local Transport Manager with planning analysis, capacity reviews and network optimisation.
  • Ensure transport-related documentation is completed, stored and maintained appropriately.
  • Support regional and divisional initiatives relating to transport, compliance and operational excellence
  • Escalates significant customer service, compliance or capacity risks to the Local Transport Manager.
  • Monitor and promote effective use of Delivery Management Systems and transport processes.
  • Escalate compliance, vehicle or driver concerns appropriately.
  • Support the business in maintaining high standards of safety, wellbeing and environmental performance.
  • Ensure all transport administration is completed accurately and within required timescales.
  • Promote a positive safety culture and adherence to company policies and procedures.
Required Skills And Experience
  • Previous experience in transport planning, logistics coordination or fleet scheduling.
  • Strong geographical knowledge and route planning capability.
  • Understanding of transport legislation and Operator Licence requirements.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships across multiple functions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and transport management systems.
  • Resilient, adaptable and able to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a wider team.
Desirable
  • Experience within the construction, merchanting or distribution sector.
  • Knowledge of Delivery Management Systems (DMS) or similar transport planning platforms.
  • Experience supporting transport KPI reporting and performance analysis.
  • Understanding of EHS and compliance management processes.
