The position operates a weekly rotating shift pattern with early and late weeks, a 30-minute unpaid lunch break, and potential move to double days within a few months.

Responsibilities

• Learn to interpret and follow engineering drawings accurately.
• Measure, cut, and prepare components to tight tolerances (within 0.5mm).
• Use measuring tools including calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
• Assemble components using hand tools and precision techniques.
• Support welding and testing processes (full training provided).
• Carry out quality checks and assist with pressure testing.
• Work closely with supervisors and team leaders to meet production targets.
• Maintain clean, safe working areas and follow health and safety procedures.

The role

Are you looking to build a career in mechanical engineering? We are recruiting a Trainee Mechanical Assembler on behalf of a high-tech engineering business based in the Cambridge area. This is a permanent role with full training provided and clear progression opportunities — ideal for someone hands-on, detail-oriented, and eager to develop precision engineering skills.

Please note: this role operates a weekly rotating shift pattern. Please take this into consideration when applying.

Shift patterns

• Week one (early): Monday to Friday, 05:45 - 13:45
• Week two (late): Monday to Wednesday 14:00 - 00:00, Thursday 14:00 - 23:30, Friday off
• All shifts include an unpaid 30-minute lunch break.

Main responsibilities

• Learn to interpret and follow engineering drawings accurately

Skills/experience

• Basic experience with hand tools or measuring equipment (desirable but not essential)
• Positive attitude and genuine willingness to learn
• Strong teamwork, communication, and timekeeping skills
• Flexible approach, with the ability to support overtime when required

Salary & working hours

• Salary: to be confirmed (increased remuneration available upon transition to double days, inclusive of shift allowance)
• Current hours: daytime (Monday to Friday)
• Potential shift to double days pattern within three to six months
