Job description

Are you an HR professional looking for an exciting new opportunity within a dynamic and supportive organisation? West Berkshire Council is seeking a Trainee HR Advisor or an HR Advisor to join our Human Resources Service, supporting our schools and reporting to the HR Business Partner - Schools. This is a fantastic chance to contribute to a wide range of HR activities, in this new role and provide valuable support to our colleagues across the team.

About The Role

The Council has a traded service offering for both HR and Payroll with a number of schools and academies. This role will support that offer which is defined in Service Level Agreements (SLA). As a Trainee/HR Advisor, you will provide advice and guidance to schools’ business managers and headteachers on a variety of HR issues in accordance with the SLA. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing advice on schools’ terms and conditions, policies and best practice.
  • Providing advice on employee relations issues such as disciplinary, grievance, and performance management.
  • Supporting the HR Business Partner with the delivery of HR projects and initiatives such as TUPE where schools require support
  • Ensuring compliance with employment legislation and best practice when providing advice
  • Liaising with the schools HR Services team and dealing with queries escalated from them
  • Working with schools trade unions as and when required to do so
  • Liaising with payroll where queries require further investigation and conclusion.

About You

We are looking for a candidate that either already possesses the skills and experience to work at a HR Advisor level or someone with some experience who is willing to learn and undertake CIPD qualifications in the future as a Trainee HR Advisor.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and attributes:

  • Previous experience in an HR role, providing advice and guidance to a wide variety of customers, ideally within a public sector
  • Sound knowledge of employment legislation and HR best practice
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Proactive and solutions-focused approach to HR issues
  • Keen willingness to learn and develop

Whilst we are open to candidates to work at either a Trainee HR Advisor or HR Advisor level, it is important potential candidates review the person specification for details of role requirements for both the trainee and/or HR Advisor levels and specify on their application which role level they are interested in.
