Job summary

The Bristol NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a 24-month training post in Blood Sciences, rotating between Haematology and Blood Transfusion within Severn Pathology laboratories. The trainee will learn automated haematology, coagulation, haemoglobinopathy screening and blood grouping under qualified staff.

This programme leads to HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist, with some structured study in the trainee's own time.

Qualifications

Knowledge of health and safety legislation applicable to laboratories.
Understanding of codes of practice and professional guidelines.
Good written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills.
Good organisation skills and attention to detail.
Effective team worker.
Good IT and keyboard skills with efficient data entry.

Responsibilities

Complete a training course to become an HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist, covering all aspects of Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
Under supervision, assist with routine and specialist diagnostic laboratory services to national and professional standards.
Rotate through key sections of the laboratory.
Assist in maintaining the hospital blood banks and the stock control of blood and blood products.
Take part in internal quality control and external quality assurance procedures.
Build working relationships with Blood Sciences, pathology reception, central office, stores, other pathology disciplines and clinical staff.
