Job description

Job Summary

Up to 25 hours per week.

Cotehele is a Functional Mental Health Unit for predominantly over 65s, located in a purpose built 10 bedded Unit at the Glenbourne Unit, Derriford. Cotehele, a mixed ward was specifically designed with separate male and female corridors and individual en-suite rooms. A knowledge of physical and mental health challenges is required for the role. We are working with the Home Treatment Team to help prevent admissions and to support leave and facilitate a more streamlined discharge. If you would like to be considered as part of the team at this exciting time, then this job might well be for you.

All candidates must be computer literate and have a firm understanding of information governance. You will need to be able to work a rotating shift pattern to cover our 24 hour 7 day a week.

This post requires the post holder to be able to undertake all statutory and mandatory training including physical intervention training.

Main duties of the job

The postholder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

He / she will be designated to take charge.

The post holder is required to supervise staff and be able to teach qualified and unqualified staff, including basic and / or post basic students.

The staff nurse will at all times work within the spirit of the NMC code of Professional Conduct for trained nurses and local policies.

Job responsibilities

Key Tasks and Responsibilities of the Post:
  1. Utilise nursing skills to assess, plan and implement and deliver care to patients who are in an acute phase of their illness.
  2. Organise the provision of care and act as Named Nurse/Associate Nurse for a specified group of patients.
  3. Function as a member of a multidisciplinary team taking appropriate responsibility for the implementation of decisions made by the team.
  4. Ensure planned nursing care is implemented and evaluated, taking appropriate action in the light of evaluation.
  5. Participate in training programmes for both trained and untrained staff.
  6. In conjunction with the university and Senior Staff Nurses ensure training programmes/objectives for learner nurses are implemented.
  7. Be responsible for implementing drug administration procedures according to laid down policy.
  8. Maintain standards of care to the highest level within available resources.
  9. Maintain confidentiality in respect to the patient at all times.
  10. Actively participate in line management with senior and junior members of staff.
  11. Liaise effectively with other wards and services.
  12. Communicate clearly with patients, their families and all other mental health professional groups about their health problems and care plan.
  13. Actively participate in clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives.
  14. Play an active role in CPA multi disciplinary reviews and ward rounds.
  15. Encourage patients to play a part in the Care Plan and ensure they receive a copy of it.
  16. Provide mentorship for students.
  17. Attend and participate in meetings.
  18. Participate in new service developments.
