Job description

BUSINESS FUNCTION: Engineering

GRADE: ML1/SB1

SALARY: £38,129 per annum

ROLE TYPE: Onsite

HOURS: Average 37 per week

A clean, presentable train doesn’t happen by chance. It takes great people, consistent standards and someone who can spot where things can be better – then make those improvements happen.

As Train Presentation Performance Improvement Manager, you’ll work across your region to raise standards and improve performance. You’ll coach and develop teams, use performance information to identify where improvements are needed, and work with colleagues to turn those insights into practical changes that make a difference.

It’s a role with real regional influence. You’ll help shape how Train Presentation teams work, support colleagues to reach their potential and make sure our customers see the results every time they step on board.

What you’ll be doing
  • Coaching Train Presentation teams and colleagues to improve performance and deliver consistent standards.
  • Identifying trends and opportunities through inspections, audits and performance data, then putting practical improvements in place.
  • Supporting colleagues through performance improvement, training and development.
  • Managing the regional Train Presentation Facilitator and delivering training for new starters.
  • Supporting the onboarding, training and development of new Team Leaders, helping them build the knowledge and skills required to perform effectively in their roles.
  • Making sure teams have the right processes, technology, information and resources to do their jobs effectively.
  • Supporting the Regional Manager with operational, people and performance matters.
  • Acting as the regional Safety, Health, Environment and Compliance (SHEC) Champion and helping maintain high standards of safety and compliance.
  • Investigating incidents, identifying root causes and using what you learn to prevent issues happening again.
About you

You’ll know what good Train Presentation looks like and, importantly, you’ll know how to help people achieve it. You’ll be someone who enjoys improving performance, developing others and finding better ways of working.

You’ll bring:
  • Experience of coaching, motivating and influencing people to improve performance.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the confidence to challenge when standards can be better.
  • Good IT and communication skills, with the ability to turn information and data into practical improvements.
  • Experience of risk assessments and Method of Work Statements.
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques, equipment and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) requirements.
  • A flexible approach to working hours, with the willingness to visit teams in their workplace across day and night shifts, including occasional weekends.
  • An A1 Assessor qualification or willing to work towards – this is essential for the role.
  • The ability to drive, with a full manual driving licence, held for minimum 2 years.
  • A willingness to complete relevant railway safety and management training, where required.
  • Knowledge of Northern’s systems and the wider railway environment would be useful, but it’s your ability to improve performance, coach people and make change happen across a region that will really matter.

Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We’re also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.
