Job summary

Alstom in the United Kingdom is seeking a Train Operability Engineer to analyse operational needs across the rolling stock life cycle, from manufacturing to maintenance and decommissioning.

You will work with System Engineers to define operability and usability requirements, validate use cases, and ensure safe, reliable operation of trains in real-world conditions.

Qualifications

  • Experience in train systems engineering across project lifecycle.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary stakeholders is desirable.
  • Knowledge of UK railway operability standards is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse operational needs across the rolling stock life cycle (manufacturing, service, maintenance, decommissioning).
  • Define operability, usability and maintainability in agreement with the rolling stock context.
  • Identify gaps and manage them with the project team during tender and contract execution.
  • Perform operability analyses with System Engineers (use cases, DITLOTT, scenarios).
  • Verify analysis outcomes using modelling and simulation tools.
  • Assist in defining human interfaces for drivers and other users.
  • Support allocation of derived requirements to subsystems.
  • Provide RoE to improve standard solutions and RoE in trainings.

Your future role

As a Train Operability Engineer. you will analyse operational needs (like operationalenvironment,deployment, journeys, performances) for the complete life cycle of the rolling stock (for instance manufacturing, commercial service, maintenance, decommissioning).


You will help define in agreement with the rolling stock’soperabilitycontext (like environmental conditions, infrastructure, users), theoperability, usability, maintainability of the Rolling Stock to develop, to ensure safe and reliable operation of the rolling stock according to operational needs.


We'll look to you for:


  • Identify theoperabilitycontext of the rolling stock to be developed

  • Perform rolling stock’s source requirements analysis (like customer requirements, norms, laws) regarding operation withinoperabilitycontext

  • Identify gaps in the above analysis and manage these gaps together with project team in tender and in contract execution phase

  • Thoroughly performoperabilityanalysis together with System Engineers (identifying operational use cases, developing operational use case scenarios, applying methodologies like "Day In The Life-cycle Of The Train" (DITLOTT))

  • Verify theoperabilityanalysis process outcomes with all necessary verification means, including modelling and simulation means

  • Assist in defining human interfaces for all involved users (like driver’s desk, picture model, tooling)

  • Assist System Engineers in allocating derived requirements including non-functional ones to subsystems

  • Provide ReturnonExperience (RoE) to be implemented in standard solutions to improve the relatedQCD

  • Support onoperabilityrelated questions, prepare and give local trainings when appropriate

  • Working experience in train system engineering at various stages in project lifecycle is required for this role

  • Proven experience of working with multidisciplinary stakeholders

  • Strong working knowledge of UK Rule Book for Train Operability

  • Awareness of different railwayoperabilityaspects, for instance:

    • Operational environment like environmental conditions (climatic, EMC…), infrastructure (stations, power supplies, tunnels…), users (staff, passengers…)

    • Operational needs and missions (life cycle, journeys, performances)

    • Operabilityprocedures (maintenance/driving rules…)
