Job summary

Durham County Council is seeking a Traffic Engineer to design and deliver traffic management, road safety and transport planning schemes to improve safety across communities. You will lead schemes, respond to public queries, and oversee orders while supporting junior staff and contributing to service development.

The role offers career progression within a dynamic Traffic Management Team, with hybrid working options and a strong focus on collaboration with partners and elected members.

Qualifications

  • HNC in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in traffic management and/or accident investigation.
  • Experience dealing with members of the public and elected members.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and coordinate traffic management and road safety schemes.
  • Respond to traffic and highway matters raised by the public, elected members and partner organisations.
  • Oversee Traffic Regulation Orders and associated legislation, working closely with legal colleagues.
  • Supervise junior team members and check technical drawings and reports.
  • Provide advice and guidance on traffic management measures and highway matters.
  • Support senior staff with budget management, project delivery and service development.
  • Represent the service at meetings, working groups and panels.
  • Support the development and wellbeing of colleagues within the team.

Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Traffic Engineer to join our Traffic Management Team. In this varied role, you will design and deliver traffic management, road safety and transport planning schemes that help improve safety and support our communities.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

You will be responsible for designing, commissioning and delivering schemes associated with traffic management, road safety engineering and transport planning initiatives, in accordance with relevant standards and legislation.

You will:

  • Design, implement and co-ordinate traffic management and road safety schemes.
  • Respond to traffic and highway matters raised by the public, Elected Members and partner organisations.
  • Oversee Traffic Regulation Orders and associated legislation, working closely with legal colleagues.

This is a career graded post. Appointment will be made at a grade appropriate to your qualifications, skills and experience, with opportunities for progression through the grades.

WHAT WLL I NEED?
  • HNC in Civil Engineering or equivalent in a relevant subject
  • Experience at an appropriate level in traffic management, and/or accident investigation.
  • Experience in dealing with members of the public and Elected members
