Job summary

Birmingham Ormiston Academy is seeking a capable Technical Theatre team member to support all BOA showcases and productions. The ideal candidate has experience in live sound mixing, desk programming, and lighting control, with an interest in the performing arts and technical theatre.

Responsibilities include running live sound, lighting operation, and assisting with production management for school shows and community events, in a dynamic educational setting.

Qualifications

• Experience with live sound mixing for performances or productions.
• Ability to programme lighting rigs and operate lighting desks to a high standard.
• Understanding of basic electrical practice and health & safety requirements.

Job Overview

Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA) is a 14 to 19 academy specialising in Creative, Digital and Performing Arts. The Academy opened in September 2011 and has over 1000 students. BOA is 100% selective and students must earn a place on their chosen arts pathway through an aptitude process which means they value their place at the academy. As a result, behaviour and attitudes to learning are excellent.

We are delighted to offer this exciting opportunity to support all BOA showcases and productions as part of the Technical Theatre team. We are looking to appoint somebody with previous experience who has ideally carried out a similar role in a working theatre or school environment. The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in the performing arts and technical theatre arts, as well as possessing a strong creative background.

We are looking for someone who has:

• Proven experience of live sound mixing, desk programming and temporary installation
• Proven ability to operate and programme lighting control panels to an advanced standard (experience of ETC EOS family and ION series lighting desks is essential)
• Experience in sound design, including choosing specifications for productions is desirable
• Understanding of current design software and ability to effectively interpret plans
• A good working knowledge of fundamental electrical practice and theory (industry recognised qualifications would be an advantage)
• A good working knowledge of health and safety practices, including working at heights
• Experience of production management for shows and showcases
• A specialism and background in sound is desirable

Annual Salary:

• £26,016 (SSP4) to £31,015 (SSP15) - Pay Scales 2026
• Local government pension scheme

Holiday and paid leave:

• 24 days' holiday entitlement per academic year plus all bank holidays as paid leave
• Time-of-in-lieu (TOIL) for any overtime
• This role allows the successful candidate to request annual leave during term time, through negotiation
