Job Description:

Brief Description

You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day.

A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a Technician, you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our Technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors; if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.

If you succeed, you can look forward to a rewarding career with a company that recently ranked in the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

Internal Candidates Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you opt for the Standard Maintenance contract.

Application Process: You will need to complete pre-screening questions; please read each carefully before responding.

About the role (External):

Our Technicians serve as the vital link between the Team Leader and Operatives.

Specializing in Track Maintenance, you’ll be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way) to ensure safety and efficiency. This involves manual work with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and structures supporting the trains.

Work conditions include outdoor environments in all weather, often involving transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, adherence to rules, and teamwork are essential, especially working near moving trains at high speeds.

You matter to your team:

You should be a natural team player, capable of leading when asked, delivering work safely, and ensuring team competencies meet safety standards. Being a role model for safe work behaviors and proactive risk challenges is critical.

You matter to us:

Technicians can progress to become Team Leaders. We value self-development and continuous learning, providing training for technical and non-technical skills. No rail experience is necessary, but transferable skills should align with the following:

  • Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team safely and efficiently.
  • Effective communication: Strong skills to deliver clear instructions.
  • Technical skills: Knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques.
  • Safety: Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems, and challenge unsafe situations.
  • Problem-solving: Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions and keeping skills updated.
  • Willingness to learn: Continuous skill development.
  • Relevant qualification: Ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 in the discipline or equivalent experience.

Additional information:

  • Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends.
  • Outdoor work: Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
  • Safety: Employment subject to drug, alcohol testing, and medical assessments, including hearing and eyesight exams.
  • Driving license: Category B required for driving Network Rail vehicles.
  • Commute: Must live within 60 minutes of the location.
