Job Description:

What will you be doing?

You'll help keep our nation moving every single day.

A critical part of our work is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors; if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training for you to work safely and competently on the network.

If you succeed, you'll have a rewarding career with a company that joined the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

About the role (External)

Our technicians are the vital link between team leaders and operatives.

Specializing in a range of disciplines, for this role you'll become a specialist in Track Maintenance.

Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, day or night, often performing demanding manual work and transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, respect for rules, and teamwork are critical, especially when working near moving trains at high speed.

You matter to your team

Being a natural team player, you'll also be able to lead when asked. You'll use your skills to deliver work safely and ensure your team has the right competencies, acting as a role model for safe behaviors and confidently challenging potential safety risks to ensure everyone returns home safely each day.

You matter to us

Today's technicians can progress to become tomorrow's team leaders.

Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is vital. We will provide training to develop both technical and non-technical skills. If you're transitioning from another industry, our structured training will equip you with the skills and confidence for a rewarding rail career.

Our technicians are essential in maintenance teams. While rail experience isn't mandatory, you must demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following:

  • Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work.
  • Effective communication: Strong skills to deliver clear instructions.
  • Technical skills: Knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques.
  • Safety: Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems, and challenge unsafe situations.
  • Problem solving: Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions and keeping skills up-to-date.
  • Willingness to learn: Continual development of relevant skills and knowledge.
  • Relevant qualification: Ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 in your discipline or equivalent experience.

Additional information

  • Shifts: Involving days, nights, and weekends.
  • Outdoor work: Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
  • Safety checks: Employment subject to drug/alcohol testing, medical, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight exams.
  • Driving: Must have a Category B driving license to operate Network Rail vehicles.
  • Commute: Within 60 minutes of the location.
