Job Description:

Brief Description

You'll help keep our nation moving every single day.

A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our technician community comes from various backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We're focused on your transferable skills and behaviors, and if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.

If you succeed, you can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that recently ranked in the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you opt for the GTRM IMC25 contract.

About the role (External)

Our technicians serve as the vital link between the team leader and operatives.

Specializing in Signalling & Telecoms, you'll work with equipment such as signals controlling train movements, level crossings, and points systems. With willingness to learn, you'll develop a broad range of technical skills across manual, electrical, and digital equipment.

Working outdoors in all weather conditions, day or night, often involves manual work and transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, respect for rules, and teamwork are critical, especially working near high-speed trains.

You matter to your team

As a natural team player, you'll be able to lead when asked, using your skills to ensure safe work delivery and verifying team competencies to meet safety standards. You'll role model safe behaviors and confidently address potential safety risks.

You matter to us

Technicians can progress to become team leaders. Your commitment to self-development is vital, and we provide comprehensive training to enhance both technical and non-technical skills. Even if you're transitioning from another industry, our structured training will equip you with the skills and confidence for a rewarding rail career.

While rail experience isn't mandatory, demonstrating how your transferable skills meet the following criteria is essential:

  • Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team safely and efficiently.
  • Effective communication: Strong skills to give clear instructions to the team and colleagues.
  • Technical skills: Experience in inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to the discipline.
  • Safety: Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems, and challenge unsafe situations.
  • Problem solving: Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions, and keeping skills updated.
  • Willingness to learn: Continuous development of skills and knowledge of standards and procedures.
  • Relevant qualification: Ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 in the discipline, or equivalent experience.

Additional Information

  • Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends with changing patterns.
  • Outdoor working: Comfortable working in various weather conditions.
  • Safe working: Employment is subject to drug/alcohol testing, medical, BPSS checks, and eyesight/hearing exams.
  • Driving: Must have a valid driving license (category B).
  • Commute: Reside within a 60-minute commute of the location.
