Job summary

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery seeks a Technician to fabricate and install exhibitions, and to install and program audio-visual equipment and lighting. You will safely move and handle collection items while collaborating across departments on complex projects.

The role requires hands-on workshop skills, the ability to work at height, and flexible hours to fit museum installations outside public hours.

Qualifications

  • Experience in exhibition fabrication and installation.
  • Experience with different materials and workshop tools.
  • Evidence of using audio-visual equipment and lighting control.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and install exhibitions.
  • Install and program AV and lighting systems.
  • Safely move and handle museum items.
  • Collaborate with teams across departments on complex projects.
  • Work safely to achieve project goals and deadlines.
  • Propose creative design solutions as needs arise.

Job description

Technician

£28,704 per annum

37 hours per week

Working hands-on with renowned art collections in Birmingham Museum & Art Galley, as well as supporting across our other sites, you will bring exhibitions to life through creative fabrication and technical expertise.

What you'll be doing:
  • Exhibition fabrication and installation
  • Audio-visual installation and lighting control and programming
  • Safely moving and handling collection items within the museum
  • Team working and collaborating across departments on complex projects
  • Working safely and responsibly to achieve project goals
  • Formulating creative design solutions as needs arise
What we're looking for:
  • Experience working in a similar environment
  • Experience of using different materials
  • Evidence of using audio-visual equipment
  • Ability to work within a team as well as independently
  • Applicants should be able to work at height, and also be competent with hand tools and other workshop-based activities, such as basic carpentry and materials handling
  • Able to work flexible hours & days - some exhibitions need installing when the museum is shut to the public
