Job description

Location: Somerset Heritage Centre, Brunel Way, Norton Fitzwarren, Taunton, TA2 6SF

Hours: Annualised hours contract

FTE Salary: £31,528 (Pro Rata)

Contract: Annualised Hours. This role is contracted on an annualised hours basis, equivalent to 14.8 hours per week (approximately 770 hours per annum).

The South West Heritage Trust is looking for a skilled and practical Exhibition Technician to support the creation, installation and maintenance of exhibitions and displays across our museum sites.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with strong hands‑on making skills, an eye for design, and a passion for delivering high-quality visitor experiences through creative, well‑crafted exhibitions.

Working as part of our Design and Curatorial team, you will play a key role in delivering a varied programme of exhibitions and heritage projects. You will construct and install exhibition elements, produce bespoke display materials, and help ensure our galleries are well‑maintained.

This is a flexible, annualised hours role. Your working pattern will vary across the year depending on project demands, with occasional evening and weekend work required.

Key responsibilities of the role:
  • Support the design, construction and installation of exhibitions and displays.
  • Work collaboratively on exhibition planning and delivery.
  • Assist with the transport, installation and maintenance of collections and displays across sites.
  • Support graphic production and finishing for exhibitions and wider heritage projects.
  • Source materials and provide technical advice to colleagues on design and production.
  • Maintain a safe, well‑organised workshop environment in line with Health & Safety requirements.

You will bring a strong combination of technical skill, creativity and practical problem-solving. You’ll be comfortable working both independently and as part of a collaborative team, often to tight deadlines. You will have experience in construction, fabrication or a relevant design discipline, strong practical skills, particularly in woodworking and use of workshop machinery and an eye for detail and design quality. Good communication skills and a collaborative approach are essential and the ability to manage competing priorities in a busy environment.

A full driving licence and ability to travel across Somerset is essential
