You'll help keep our nation moving every single day.

A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our technician community comes from various backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors; if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.

If you succeed, you can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that recently ranked in the top 50 of Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

About the role (External)

Our Technicians provide the essential link between the Team Leader and the team's Operatives.

Technicians specialize in various disciplines. For this role, you'll become a specialist in:

Track: You'll be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way) to keep the railway safe and efficient. This is a manual role involving working with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and ancillary structures.

Our Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, day or night, often involving manual labor and transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, adherence to rules, and teamwork are critical, especially when working near moving trains at high speeds.

You matter to your team

A natural team player, you'll be able to lead when asked by the team leader. You'll use your skills to deliver work safely and ensure the team has the right competencies to meet safety standards. Being a role model for safe working behaviors and confidently challenging risks to safety are essential to ensure everyone's safety.

You matter to us

Today's Technicians can advance to become tomorrow's Team Leaders.

Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is vital. We provide all necessary training to develop both technical and non-technical skills. If you're transitioning from another industry, our structured training will equip you with the skills and confidence for a rewarding career in rail.

While rail experience isn't mandatory, you must demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following criteria:

  • Leadership – Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work.
  • Effective communication – Strong skills to deliver clear instructions to the team and colleagues.
  • Technical skills – Knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to your discipline.
  • Safety – Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems of work, and challenge unsafe situations.
  • Problem-solving – Persistent in finding safe and effective solutions, keeping skills up-to-date with standards and procedures.
  • Willingness to learn – Eager to develop skills and stay current with industry standards.
  • Relevant qualification – Ideally an NVQ Level 1 or 2 related to your discipline, or equivalent experience.
Additional information
  • Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends.
  • Outdoor work: Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
  • Safe working: Employment is subject to drug and alcohol testing and medical assessments, including hearing and eyesight exams. External candidates will undergo additional checks.
  • Driving: A Category B driving license is required to operate Network Rail vehicles.
  • Commute: Must live within a 60-minute commute of the location.

Additional requirements include experience in safe systems of work, organizing work delivery, strong communication skills, discipline-specific maintenance knowledge, ability to work shifts outdoors, and meeting application screening benchmarks.
