Overview

One of RSSB’s functions is to develop railway standards on behalf of the railway industry in Great Britain. Standards are an agreed way of doing something. They support the railway to function as a whole system, help manage risks, open markets, and reduce costs as the industry does not have to keep reinventing the wheel.

The Standards Management, Policy and Strategy team leads three workstreams to support the development of railway standards: the standards management, standards delivery, and policy and strategy workstreams. These focus on governance, compliance, economic assessments, regulatory policy, and strategic direction, working closely with industry bodies like the DfT and ORR.

As a Technical Standards Editor (internally known as Standards Manager), you will be part of the standards management workstream. Your responsibilities include ensuring the accuracy and quality of written content from the Standards Directorate, collaborating with standards writers, and upholding professionalism in all communications.

Responsibilities
  1. Copyedit railway standards and other materials, ensuring clarity, consistency, and adherence to RSSB’s style and branding guidelines. Maintain effective communication with technical authors.
  2. Proofread documents to ensure readiness for publication, providing final quality checks.
  3. Stay updated on language trends, grammar rules, and industry terminology.
  4. Support the management of RSSB’s content management system (CCMS).
  5. Assist in developing training and support for colleagues.
  6. Promote consistent use of the content management system.
  7. Contribute to digital transformation initiatives, including standards’ customer hub development.
  8. Provide coaching and feedback to improve writing skills and style adherence.
  9. Assist in governance procedures and continuous improvement activities.
  10. Support user acceptance testing of new tools and processes.
Qualifications
  1. Experience in copyediting and proofreading technical documentation with strong attention to detail under deadlines.
  2. Ability to interpret briefs and business requirements.
  3. Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and proofreading tools.
  4. Flexibility to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities.
  5. Effective communication skills tailored to the audience.
  6. Ability to embrace change and navigate uncertainty.
  7. Team-oriented mindset with a focus on achieving goals.
  8. Responsibility and accountability in task completion.
  9. Customer service orientation and stakeholder relationship building.

We are committed to staff development, diversity, and inclusion. We offer flexible working arrangements and a competitive benefits package, including annual leave, health cover, season ticket loans, and pension schemes.
