Job summary

BMJ Group is seeking a Technical Product Manager to drive the build and migration to a new front end platform for BMJ’s journals, enhancing reader experience, performance and accessibility. You will focus on delivery while contributing to discovery, planning and prioritising work within sprints for the technical team.

You will liaise with multiple stakeholders, lead sprint ceremonies, manage the backlog and evaluate outcomes to ensure the platform meets business needs and reader requirements.

Job Purpose

We are looking for a Technical Product Manager to work on the build of and migration to a new front end platform for BMJ’s journals, aiming to improve reader experience, platform performance and accessibility. The role operates primarily in delivery, but will also contribute to discovery aspects of the product development process. Key tasks include planning and prioritising work within sprints for the technical team, coordinating cross-functional teams, measuring performance and impact of migrated journals and pages, and assessing feasibility of the new platform for serving article pages.

Responsibilities

Liaise with all stakeholders to consider their needs for the development of all pages in the new decoupled front end platform.

Regular and open communication with stakeholders, including but not limited to the Publishing & Events product team, engineering team, publishing team, editorial team, UX designers, marketing team, external suppliers such as Highwire and Coforge.

Help lead sprint ceremonies, including the daily stand-up, backlog grooming, sprint planning and retrospective meetings.

Managing the backlog - develop scope, define backlog items, and prioritise depending on user need and business requirements.

Serve as the voice of our users - both internal users of the CMS, and external users of the pages themselves.

Evaluating product success, measuring whether delivered changes achieve agreed outcomes.

Deliver product vision, strategy and goals set out by Reader Experience PM.

Triaging bugs and errors, and working with affected stakeholders in order to prioritise resolutions.

Approach to work:

Dealing with complex technical and business issues, requiring strong problem solving skills.

Proven ability to rapidly research unfamiliar technologies, contribute to problem-solving in new domains, and critically assess technical proposals from the engineering team.

Breaking down migration of complex web pages into discrete chunks of work.

Negotiate with teams over resources and priorities.

Ability to communicate complex technical information to a lay audience of internal stakeholders.

Managing stakeholders expectation on features, functionality and delivery times.

Working with editorial teams to understand their requirements.

Skill, Experience & Qualifications:

Proven product management skills, with emphasis on communication and collaborative working

Excellent oral and written communication

Ability to maintain a healthy, prioritised backlog ready for delivery

Analytical skills in order to assess product performance

Ability to solve complex technical problems as and when they arise

Ability to prioritise own workload

Whilst there is no direct line management in this position, the post holder will be required to supervise and influence teams to deliver requirements on time

Experience within STM journals publishing

Experience of working with editorial teams

Experience of developing headless CMS

An understanding of journals hosting platform technologies, including identity and access management systems

Experience working in agile and managing Scrum teams
