Job summary

Manchester Metropolitan University invites applications for a Technical Officer to join the Surface Engineering & Vacuum Systems team. Based in the Surface Engineering laboratories, you will operate, maintain and repair laboratory equipment, support vacuum systems and thin‑film deposition technologies, and ensure safe, reliable performance.

You will develop technical documentation, SOPs, and equipment records; train service users; and devise bespoke system modifications.

Qualifications

Substantial experience in a lab/workshop environment.
Experience with vacuum systems and/or thin-film deposition technologies.
Good knowledge of vacuum theory and maintenance.
Ability to design, build and install bespoke system modifications.

Responsibilities

Operate, maintain, and repair laboratory and workshop equipment to high standards.
Manage vacuum systems and thin-film deposition technologies for optimal function.
Calibrate and troubleshoot specialist analytical equipment; maintain records.
Develop SOPs and technical documentation; ensure safety and quality compliance.
Train service users in equipment and software; provide technical support.
Drive innovative solutions to complex technical problems.
