Job summary

EMBL-EBI in Cambridge seeks a Software Development Project Lead to steer the engineering team behind Europe PMC, a major biomedical literature resource. You will provide technical leadership across backend and data services, shaping the platform's strategy, architecture and delivery at scale.

Qualifications

• A degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.
• 1) Experience managing technical delivery in Agile environments, including Scrum and Kanban.
• 2) Experience designing, building and operating large-scale, high-availability systems handling substantial data volumes and user traffic.
• 3) Experience managing software engineering projects from planning through delivery.
• 4) Experience recruiting, mentoring and supporting software engineers.
• 5) Strong stakeholder management skills, working effectively with both technical and non-technical collaborators.
• 6) Excellent communication skills and a collaborative leadership style.

Responsibilities

• Lead the technical development and long-term architecture of Europe PMC, and associated services.
• 2) Define technical roadmaps to ensure the platform scales with data, AI capabilities, and user demand.
• 3) Lead, mentor and develop a team of software engineers, supporting delivery and career growth.
• 4) Work across product, software engineering, and data science teams to deliver new features and AI-enabled services.
• 5) Prioritise development work using Agile methodologies, balancing functionality, stability and technical debt.
• 6) Oversee large-scale data ingestion and processing pipelines from multiple providers.
• 7) Ensure reliability, performance and availability of production services.
• 8) Contribute to software engineering best practices, architecture, resource planning and delivery processes.
• 9) Collaborate with EMBL-EBI colleagues and international partners on shared infrastructure and initiatives.
