Job description

The Personal Dosimetry Service (PDS) is a commercial, HSE‑approved service that measures the ionising radiation dose delivered to over 5,500 UK and overseas employers. The post holder will lead the technical operations and emergency response capability of the service, ensuring reliable delivery to customers and maintaining readiness for potential radiation incidents.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and maintenance of PDS technical capability for routine business and emergency response.
  • Assess current technical capability and propose actions to meet routine and emergency requirements.
  • Manage capital equipment, acquisitions and supplier contracts, ensuring business justifications and procurement liaison.
  • Negotiate with suppliers on purchases and support contracts, and plan routine and emergency response supplies valued over £500,000.
  • Plan forward technical improvements, conduct audits and improve quality procedures, including ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.
  • Lead and participate in RCCE emergency response exercises, training staff and ensuring liaison across UKHSA departments and external agencies.
  • Manage two teams: Technical Operations Manager and Dosemeter Logistics & Operations.
  • Exercise PDS emergency response plans, evaluate risks to routine business and provide senior audit leadership.
  • Develop and review procedures (Manuals & SOPs) for QMS compliance and HSE approval.
Qualifications
  • Level 6 scientific qualification (bachelor’s degree) or equivalent experience.
  • Experience managing a small technical team in a customer‑orientated commercial environment.
  • Experience with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, laboratory audits and quality procedures.
  • Strong customer care skills, communication and relationship building (written & verbal).
  • Ability to analyse complex scientific and operational problems and provide sound decisions.
  • Excellent prioritising, risk assessment and resource management skills.
  • Experience delivering formal lectures/training at scientific meetings is desirable.
  • Counter‑Terrorism Check security clearance (CTC) required before appointment.
