Team Member - Produce - Full Time

Department: Produce

Employment Type: Permanent

Location: Hampstead

Reporting To: Store Manager

Compensation: £13.50 / hour

Description

As a Team Member in the Produce department at Planet Organic, you play a vital role in delivering our mission to promote health and sustainability in our communities. You will take ownership of the day-to-day running of the Produce section, ensuring it is well stocked, fresh, beautifully presented and performing strongly. You will manage the section from ordering and stock control through to delivery, merchandising and wastage, while maintaining high standards of customer service, food safety and product quality. You will also work closely with the store manager, buyers, suppliers and wider store team to maintain availability, respond to customer needs and deliver a commercially successful and engaging Produce section.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Experience & Produce Standards

  • Deliver a fun, educational and rewarding customer experience, providing knowledgeable guidance on fresh, organic and seasonal produce.
  • Take ownership of the day-to-day standards of the Produce section, ensuring it is fresh, well stocked, well organised, beautifully presented and easy for customers to shop.
  • Carry out regular quality and freshness checks, ensuring products meet our standards for quality, presentation and freshness, and removing products that do not.
  • Maintain high standards of food hygiene, health and safety and cleanliness across the Produce section, following all relevant procedures.

Ordering, Stock & Wastage

  • Place Produce orders and manage stock levels effectively, using sales, availability, seasonality, promotions and expected demand to maintain availability while minimising over-ordering and unnecessary wastage.
  • Monitor and manage Produce wastage, identifying opportunities to reduce waste and recording or reporting wastage as required.
  • Maintain effective stock rotation and ensure stock is handled and stored appropriately

Deliveries, Pricing & Merchandising

  • Receive and check Produce deliveries, ensuring quantities, quality and condition meet our standards, and raise any issues promptly.
  • Maintain clear and accurate pricing and promotional information across the Produce section, ensuring price changes, promotions and range updates are correctly priced and signed.
  • Keep shelf-edge labels, promotional signage and merchandising accurate, up to date and easy for customers to understand.
  • Implement range, promotional and merchandising changes accurately and promptly in store.

Communication & Commercial Awareness

  • Maintain effective communication with the Store Manager and relevant Buyer through Produce meetings, providing updates and feedback on availability, pricing, promotions, product quality, customer feedback and range opportunities.
  • Maintain positive and effective communication with Produce suppliers regarding orders, deliveries, availability and product quality, providing timely feedback and escalating any issues or recurring concerns to the Store Manager.
  • Use customer feedback, sales performance, availability and wastage information to identify opportunities to improve the Produce section and support commercial performance.

Wider Store Support

  • Work collaboratively with the wider store team to support the smooth operation of the store, including completing daily tasks, supporting opening and closing procedures and working outside of your normal duties when required.

This is not an exhaustive list of responsibilities and may change based on business needs.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Previous retail, fresh produce, grocery or food & drink experience is preferred but not essential.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a willingness to learn.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to independently manage a section and prioritise competing tasks.
  • Ability to take ownership of ordering, stock control, merchandising and wastage.
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly around product quality, freshness, presentation, pricing and stock rotation.
  • Passion for food, health and wellbeing, with an interest in organic, natural and sustainable products.
  • Good understanding of food hygiene and health and safety practices in a retail or hospitality environment.
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of the importance of availability, sales, margin and wastage.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues, buyers, suppliers and customers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a wider store team while taking independent responsibility for the Produce section.
Working Hours & Physical Requirements
  • Our stores trade from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, Monday to Sunday, including public holidays. We are looking for team members who are flexible with their availability and able to work a variety of shifts across these trading hours as needed.
  • This role involves lifting, moving and carrying stock weighing between 16-25 kg. We are looking for team members who are able to carry out these tasks safely, with or without reasonable workplace adjustments.
  • This role involves standing, walking and moving around for extended periods, which may be up to 8 hours per shift. We are looking for team members who are able to carry out these duties safely, with or without reasonable workplace adjustments.
How Success is Measured
