Job summary

Northumberland County Council is seeking a dedicated refuse collection team leader to supervise front line staff and ensure households, industrial and commercial waste services are delivered to time, quality and safety standards.

You will manage rota planning, coaching staff, and maintain positive staff relations, with occasional site visits and driving duties in a designated area. A valid HGV licence or willingness to train is required.

Qualifications

• Predominantly driving with occasional walking and some lifting.
• Remain alert for traffic and other potential hazards.
• Occasional office based work in a seated position.
• Attend training and development courses, meetings or other work sites within area.
• Normal working week, Monday to Thursday, with early mornings, occasional evening, weekend, emergency call out work and Bank Holiday working.
• Driving regulations apply.
• Operating outdoors in all weathers and traffic conditions and in hazardous and unpleasant conditions at waste reception facilities.
• Regular contact with unpleasant and potentially hazardous waste materials.
• Knowledge of the legislation and regulations relating to driving HGVs.

Responsibilities

• Assist in determining the most effective deployment of staff and vehicles to ensure that refuse collection and recycling services are completed within the agreed time, quality and service standards.
• Direct and supervise the activities of a team of front line refuse collection staff, providing guidance and motivation to achieve objectives and quality standards.
• Contribute to induction, risk assessment, training and development of front line staff, acting as coach and mentor as necessary.
• Receive service requests via administrative support staff and schedule refuse collection rounds for bulky waste, garden waste and servicing of recycling centres.
• Promote and maintain a positive relationship with front line staff to develop constructive employee relations.
