Job summary

Jobtailor in Manchester is seeking an engineering manager to lead the Portal Systems team, owning delivery, architecture, and roadmap.

You will line-manage engineers, hire, conduct reviews, and collaborate with Product and Engineering to deliver scalable web and backend systems while upholding data privacy and security standards.

Qualifications

• Experience managing or mentoring software engineers, including hiring and performance reviews.
• Strong background in modern web and backend systems.
• Experience with APIs and AWS/Serverless.
• Proficient in PHP and Laravel; React/Angular experience is a plus.
• Familiar with AI tooling for tasks.

Responsibilities

• Own delivery for the Panel Systems (Portal) team, including scope and trade-offs.
• Line-manage engineers building Portal applications and APIs.
• Guide evolution of Portal architecture for scalability and maintainability.
• Contribute to feature development and maintenance.
• Support automation, tooling, and platform improvements.
• Hire and onboard engineers; conduct regular performance reviews.
• Establish engineering practices for observability, testing, documentation, and incident response.
• Ensure secure, reliable systems for panel engagement and data collection.
• Represent team work to Product and Engineering teams.
• Translate business priorities into technical plans and roadmaps.
• Shape roadmap balancing technical debt and features.
• Uphold data privacy, compliance, and health and safety policies.

Job description

• Own delivery for the Panel Systems (Portal) team, including scope, sequencing, and trade-offs
• Line-manage a small team of engineers building and maintaining Portal applications, APIs, and supporting services
• Conduct regular 1:1s, provide feedback, and support career development
• Guide the evolution of Portal architecture to improve scalability, maintainability, and consistency
• Contribute to feature development and application maintenance
• Support automation, tooling, and platform improvements
• Hire and onboard engineers
• Run fair, well-calibrated performance reviews
• Establish and maintain engineering practices covering observability, testing, documentation, and incident response
• Ensure reliable, secure, and performant systems supporting panel engagement and data collection
• Represent the team’s work to Product and Engineering teams
• Translate business priorities into technical plans and vice versa
• Shape a roadmap balancing technical improvements, technical debt, and feature work
• Uphold security, quality, data privacy, compliance, and health and safety policies

Requirements

• Experience managing or mentoring software engineers, including hiring, performance, and career development
• Solid technical background in modern web and backend systems
• Experience with APIs and cloud platforms such as AWS and Serverless
• Experience with PHP, Laravel, Angular, and React
• Experience and confidence using AI tooling for general-purpose and software engineering tasks
• Experience contributing to or delivering customer-facing or internal product platforms
• Knowledge of agile software development methodologies and delivery practices
• Clear, direct communication and ability to work with a range of stakeholders
• Comfortable engaging with architecture, system design, and engineering trade-offs
• Experience with automation, including test automation and AI-assisted workflows
• Familiarity with data privacy and governance, such as GDPR and consented panel data
• Understanding of information security and compliance frameworks, such as ISO 27001
