Job summary

The University of Birmingham invites applications for the CTL Laboratory Manager (Metallurgy & Materials). Based at Edgbaston, you will oversee undergraduate teaching laboratories, provide in-lab support, health and safety compliance, and line-manage technical staff to deliver high-quality practical sessions.

You will collaborate with academic staff to develop labs, manage equipment and consumables, and adapt to timetabled commitments, including occasional after-hours sessions.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in laboratory-based work with relevant equipment.
• Experience managing health and safety in a teaching lab.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office (Teams/SharePoint) and quick to learn new software.
• Ability to prioritise workload and work autonomously or in a team.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily in-lab operational support to teaching staff to ensure lab sessions run smoothly.
• Troubleshoot and respond to issues during practical sessions as they arise.
• Provide lab inductions and training on equipment operation to academic staff and PGTA.
• Assist in development and improvement of practical labs and protocols with CTL staff.
• Manage building-related problems and liaise with facilities for equipment maintenance.
