Job summary

The University of Birmingham is recruiting for a fixed-term technical role in the School of Metallurgy and Materials, Edgbaston, Birmingham. The post involves hands-on battery recycling tasks, disassembly, passivation, and data entry in a safety‑conscious lab environment.

You will support everyday project operations, contribute to lab-wide safety, and collaborate with academics, researchers and contractors across the HERMES project.

Qualifications

• Working knowledge of batteries and battery safety.
• Experience with mechanical materials processing and separation techniques.
• Experience with analytical characterization techniques such as SEM, XRD, XRF or ICP‑OES.
• Strong communication and ability to promote health and safety compliance.

Responsibilities

• Safe handling, discharge, disassembly and passivation of reactive cells before processing.
• Support operation of laboratory shredding and sorting equipment.
• Mechanical separation and sorting of shredded output streams.
• Prepare and characterise recovered materials using SEM, XRD, XRF and ICP‑OES.
• Maintain accurate records of techniques and experimental procedures.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety and laboratory procedures.
