Job summary

Teaching Personnel seeks a resilient SEN 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a KS2 pupil with SEMH needs in Darlington. You will monitor emotions, assist with learning, and work closely with the classroom team to ensure a supportive environment.

You will collaborate with the class teacher, SENCo and external professionals to implement individual plans and promote inclusion and resilience in a challenging yet rewarding setting.

SEN 1:1 Teaching Assistant (SEMH – KS2)

Location: Darlington
Contract: Full time

We are seeking a resilient, compassionate, and highly motivated SEN 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a key stage 2 pupil with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is a rewarding but challenging role, requiring patience, consistency, and a strong commitment to making a difference in a child’s life.

About the Role

You will work on a 1:1 basis with a pupil who requires additional support to access learning and regulate their emotions.

  • Supporting the pupil’s emotional regulation and behaviour
  • Building a trusting, positive relationship
  • Implementing individual behaviour and support plans
  • Assisting with academic engagement across the KS2 curriculum
  • Working closely with the class teacher, SENCo, and external professionals
  • Promoting inclusion, independence, and resilience
The Ideal Candidate Will
  • Have experience working with children with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour
  • Be calm, patient, and consistent under pressure
  • Demonstrate strong behaviour management strategies
  • Be emotionally intelligent and able to de-escalate situations effectively
  • Show a genuine passion for supporting vulnerable pupils
  • Be a team player with good communication skills
Desirable (but not essential)
  • Team Teach / de-escalation training
  • Experience in a PRU, alternative provision, or similar setting
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practice
