Job description

Teaching Assistant Autism (ASC) Specialist Local Specialist Schools

Position: Full:Time, Long:Term (Term Time Only)

Salary: GBP90 : GBP95 per day (Weekly Pay : dependent on experience)

Start Date: Immediate / Next Term

Are you a patient, perceptive individual with a passion for neurodiversity? Join our specialist network as an Autism Support Assistant and help children with ASC navigate their school day with confidence, comfort, and success.

Unlocking Potential: Support Beyond the Standard Classroom

We are seeking dedicated ASC Specialists to work within local Special Schools and Resource Provisions. This role is for those who understand that for a student with Autism, a breakthrough might be a successful transition between lessons, a new word, or a calm afternoon in a sensory room.

Your Role as an ASC Champion

As an Autism Support Assistant, you are the students guide to the social and academic world, providing the scaffolding they need to thrive.

  • Sensory:First Approach: Help manage the environment to reduce sensory overload, ensuring students feel safe and ready to learn.
  • Specialised Communication: Gain or use experience with PECS, Makaton, and Visual Timetables to facilitate meaningful interaction.
  • Career Growth: Build a CV that is highly attractive for future roles in Clinical Psychology, SEN Teaching, or Occupational Therapy.
  • Weekly Pay: Competitive daily rates of GBP90 : GBP95, paid every Friday via Randstad.
  • Promoting Predictability: Use visual schedules and now and next boards to reduce anxiety and help students manage transitions between activities.
  • Supportive Interventions: Work 1:1 to deliver personalised learning tasks that align with the students specific interests and EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) goals.
  • Managing Meltdowns with Empathy: Recognise the early signs of sensory or emotional deregulation and implement calming strategies or masking breaks before a crisis occurs.
  • Social Coaching: Facilitate structured play or social interactions, helping students develop the tools they need to build friendships and work alongside peers.
Essential Requirements

We value a calm energy and a deep respect for neurodivergent ways of thinking. You are an ideal fit if you:

  • Are Naturally Observant: You can spot the small changes in a students body language that signal they need a break or a change in activity.
  • Have Relevant Experience: Experience with Autism (either professionally or personally), or knowledge of TEACCH or ABA principles, is a significant advantage.
  • Are Resilient and Kind: You understand that challenging moments are a result of communication barriers or sensory distress, and you respond with patience, not frustration.
  • Are Committed: You hold an enhanced DBS on the update service (or are willing ) and are 100 dedicated to Safeguarding.
