Job summary

A leading education recruitment agency in Sunderland is seeking enthusiastic Teaching Assistants to support children's learning across EYFS, KS1, and KS2. The role offers flexibility with day-to-day supply, short-term, and long-term placements. Candidates should ideally hold Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications and have experience working with primary age children. Major responsibilities include classroom support, targeted interventions, and assisting teachers. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are essential for success in this role.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a primary school or with children of primary age.
  • Strong knowledge of the primary curriculum.
  • Confidence supporting phonics, early reading, and numeracy development.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality classroom support across EYFS, KS1, and KS2.
  • Deliver targeted 1:1 and small group interventions in literacy and numeracy.
  • Support pupils with SEND, including ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and speech & language needs.
  • Assist teachers with lesson preparation, organisation and resources.
  • Support pupils with SEND, including ASD, ADHD and SEMH needs.
  • Apply behaviour management strategies in line with school policies.
  • Encourage pupil engagement, independence and positive learning behaviours.
  • Supervise pupils during transitions, breaks and enrichment activities.
  • Observe, monitor and report pupil progress.

Milk Education is proud to partner with a number of inclusive, welcoming, and high-achieving primary schools across Sunderland. We are currently recruiting committed and enthusiastic Teaching Assistants to support pupils across EYFS, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2.

We have a range of opportunities available including day-to-day supply, short-term placements, and long-term roles, offering flexibility to suit your availability and career goals.

This role is ideal for experienced Teaching Assistants, qualified Level 2 or Level 3 practitioners, graduates considering teacher training, or individuals with relevant transferable experience.

Teaching Assistant – Key Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality classroom support across EYFS, KS1, and KS2
  • Deliver targeted 1:1 and small group interventions in literacy and numeracy
  • Support the implementation of phonics programmes (e.g., Read Write Inc. or similar schemes)
  • Assist teachers with lesson preparation, classroom organisation, and resource management
  • Support pupils with SEND, including ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and speech & language needs
  • Implement behaviour management strategies in line with school policies
  • Encourage pupil engagement, independence, and positive learning behaviours
  • Supervise pupils during transitions, break times, and enrichment activities
  • Observe, monitor, and report on pupil progress
Teaching Assistant – Candidate Requirements

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • Previous experience working in a primary school or with children of primary age
  • A Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning (desirable)
  • Strong knowledge of the primary curriculum
  • Confidence supporting phonics, early reading, and numeracy development
  • A patient, adaptable, and proactive approach
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • A strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities
  • An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
