Job summary

GSL Education is seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant in Wakefield to support pupils across year groups within a welcoming school environment.

You will work closely with teachers to assist with lessons, provide 1:1 and small-group support, and help raise literacy and numeracy attainment while promoting positive behaviour and inclusion.

Qualifications

  • A recognised Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.
  • Experience in school or educational settings.
  • Experience supporting children with SEND (ASD, ADHD, SEMH) is advantageous.
  • Ability to provide 1:1 and small-group support.

Teaching Assistant - Wakefield

Location: Wakefield

Salary: £90-£120 per day, dependent on experience

Start Date: September 2026

Contract Type: Full-Time / Flexible

A welcoming and supportive school in Wakefield is seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified Teaching Assistant who is passionate about supporting pupils\' learning, development and wellbeing within a positive and inclusive school environment.

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and support staff to provide effective classroom assistance, helping pupils engage with their learning, develop confidence and make positive progress.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide classroom support to pupils across different year groups.
  • Assist teachers with learning activities, lesson preparation and classroom organisation.
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils who require additional assistance.
  • Support literacy, numeracy and targeted learning interventions.
  • Assist pupils with SEND, ASD, ADHD and SEMH needs.
  • Encourage positive behaviour and promote pupil engagement.
  • Support pupils with their social, emotional and academic development.
  • Help pupils develop confidence, independence and communication skills.
  • Support pupils who may experience behaviours that challenge.
  • Adapt learning resources and activities to meet individual pupil needs.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs and other support staff.
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive and positive learning environment.
The Ideal Teaching Assistant Will Have
  • A recognised Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.
  • Previous experience working within a school or educational setting.
  • Experience supporting children with additional learning needs or SEND.
  • Confidence providing 1:1 and small-group support.
  • A patient, caring and adaptable approach.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience supporting pupils with ASD, ADHD, SEMH or behaviours that challenge would be advantageous.
  • Previous experience as an SEN Teaching Assistant would be beneficial.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a wider school team.
  • Team Teach training would be desirable but is not essential.
  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
  • A fully checkable employment and reference history.
