Bedford School is seeking a Teacher of Religious Studies for a fixed-term contract starting January 2027. The role covers Year 9 through GCSE and A-Level, with emphasis on university preparation and strong subject leadership within the RS department.
The successful candidate will inspire students, contribute to a thriving academic culture, and engage in selective interview processes. Experience in the independent sector is welcome but not essential.
We wish to appoint a Teacher of Religious Studies for a fixed term on a PAA contract effective January 2027.
The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for the subject, a desire to inspire this in others and will be eager to develop their own teaching skills across Year 9, GCSE, A-Level, and university preparation.
The Religious Studies department at Bedford has a strong academic focus. We have a good record of success in terms of university uptake, including Oxbridge. A-Level results are also strong, with a pleasing number of pupils going on to study Religious Studies, Theology and Philosophy beyond Bedford at some of the country's most competitive universities, including Oxbridge.
It would be desirable, though not essential, for the successful candidate to have experience of GCSE and A Level qualifications; what is essential, however, is a willingness and enthusiasm to help ensure Religious Studies continues to play a central role in the academic life of the school. Experience of the independent sector and/or a boarding environment is not essential; each year, Bedford School welcomes teachers from the state and independent sectors in England, and from some of the world's best international schools, and we value the experience that they bring.
We welcome applications from all Religious Studies specialists, and from all backgrounds, to provide good role models for our global students.
The selection process will involve a lesson observation and interviews.
The Head of Religious Studies (Adrian Finch) would be happy to talk to prospective applicants and can be contacted through the main school reception on 01234 362200 or by email [email protected]
Bedford School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The School may carry out online searches on shortlisted applicants. The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. The School is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions on a self-declaration form in advance of attending an interview (including those which are "spent" unless they are "protected" under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children.
Bedford School is part of The Harpur Trust.
