Job summary

Brighton College invites applications for a full-time Teacher of Mathematics, starting January 2027, with flexibility for April 2027. The successful candidate will teach maths across Years 7 to A-level, contribute to enrichment activities, and support aspiring mathematicians through our Masterclass and cocurricular programme.

All teachers participate in mentoring during probation and continued professional development, using OneNote and SharePoint for shared resources.

Job description

Brighton College is seeking to appoint a full-time Teacher of Mathematics, starting January 2027. We would also consider applicants who are available to start earlier, or April 2027. The Department Mathematics is one of the most popular and successful academic subjects at Brighton. We have over 200 pupils, close to 80% of the year group, studying maths in each of Years 12 and 13, with close to half of those also opting for further maths. Whilst a core subject in Year 11, we also have 40-50% of the cohort taking the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths. The results in recent years have been excellent, with the pupils regularly achieving 100% 9-6 at IGCSE with more grade 9s counting for more than 60% of all grades. At A-level, 98%+ achieved A

B in both single and further maths in the past few years, with well over 50% of all grades being A. The department has a comprehensive Oxbridge programme, with much success in this area.

Recent years have seen record numbers of pupils achieving Gold Awards at all levels of the UKMT Maths Challenges, as well as reaching and succeeding in follow-on rounds such as the BMO, reflecting the emphasis on extension and enrichment within the department.

The department consists of 23 members of staff from various backgrounds, ranging from recent graduates to those with over two decades of experience. The common denominator being a love of mathematics and the ability to pass that joy on to the pupils. Each member of the department is expected to be a reflective and forward-looking practitioner; being an excellent teacher of mathematics is our number one priority. The department is housed in a modern, purpose built teaching block, which has enabled the development of innovative teaching practices. The department has also been at the forefront of the school's development in the use of technology as a teaching and learning aid.

Role Specification

The successful candidate will be expected to be able to teach maths across the curriculum, from Year 7 to A-level. They will be eager to contribute to the department's programme of activities, which encompasses extension for eager pupils of all ages as well as support for those finding the subject more challenging.

We want learners who are curious about mathematics, and who love their time in the classroom; this only happens with teachers who are themselves curious and always looking to learn, improve and develop their own mathematics and classroom practice. All teachers within the department are expected to assist in the development of schemes of work, as well as in the creation of teaching resources, tests and the compilation of content for our shared resources on Microsoft OneNote and SharePoint.

Additionally, all teachers at Brighton College are expected to contribute to the school's pastoral system, generally as a tutor in one of our 16 houses (of which six are boarding houses and ten are day). There is also an expectation that all teachers will contribute to the cocurricular life of the school, through the extensive Games programme, and/or through the leadership of one of over 100 school societies.

Candidates are encouraged to point to interests and enthusiasms as part of their application. All staff have the opportunity to contribute to our Masterclass programme; this is a series of weekly lessons designed to celebrate the enjoyment of learning, focusing on an area of personal academic or cultural interest. These have included subjects such as Magical Realism, Cuisine and Culture and Great Debates in History.

All teachers joining Brighton will have the benefit of guidance by an experienced mentor, whose role it will be to provide support during their probationary period.
