Job summary

Birmingham City Council is seeking an enthusiastic Teacher of the Deaf to join our Hearing Support Team. You will provide specialist assessment, teaching, and support for children and young people with hearing impairment from birth to 25 years, working with families, schools and other professionals to raise achievement and promote inclusion.

This position involves working in family homes, nurseries, mainstream schools, special schools and FE colleges and travelling across the city of Birmingham.

Qualifications

• Must hold qualified teacher status.
• We will consider applications from Qualified Teachers of the Deaf who hold the mandatory qualification, as well as those undertaking the mandatory qualification.
• We would welcome applicants with a key interest in audiology.

SEND in Birmingham is on an ambitious and improving journey. As recognised by inspectors during the June 2025 Ofsted/CQC inspection, “in recent years, the experiences of children and young people with SEND in Birmingham have started to improve.”

Do you have recent and successful experience of teaching children and young people who are deaf or hearing impaired?

Are you passionate about promoting inclusion and improving outcomes for children and young people with sensory needs?

You will provide specialist assessment, teaching, and support for children and young people (CYP) with hearing impairment from birth to 25 years, working in partnership with families, schools, and other professionals to raise achievement and promote inclusion.

This position will involve working in family homes, nurseries, mainstream schools, special schools and FE colleges and travelling across the city of Birmingham.

Candidates for this post must hold qualified teacher status.

We will consider applications from Qualified Teachers of the Deaf who hold the mandatory qualification, as well as from those who are currently undertaking the mandatory qualification, or those qualified teachers who have experience teaching deaf CYP who would be willing to undertake the mandatory training. We would welcome applications from those with a key interest in audiology.
