Job summary

Breedon Group is seeking a Surfacing Operative to join our road surfacing team at Tormitchell Quarry, Girvan. You will assist in laying and finishing asphalt, operating surfacing plant, and performing site labour as part of a skilled crew. Night shifts are required.

The role involves outdoor work, travel to sites, and a commitment to safety and quality. Training will be provided, with opportunities for progression and long‑term development within Breedon.

Responsibilities

• Assist with laying, raking, levelling and finishing asphalt materials.
• Support operation of surfacing plant, tools and equipment.
• Carry out site preparation and general labouring before, during, and after surfacing works.
• Work with Foreperson and crew to complete projects safely and efficiently.
• Conduct basic maintenance of plant, equipment and PPE.
• Follow site instructions and company procedures at all times.
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
• Report safety concerns, incidents or defects promptly.
• Be flexible to work across sites and shifts, including nights.

Position Summary: We are looking for a reliable and motivated Surfacing Operative to join our surfacing team. In this hands‑on role, you will support the delivery of road surfacing and highway maintenance projects, working as part of a skilled crew to lay and finish asphalt safely and efficiently. This role involves working outdoors, travelling to sites, and operating as part of a team to ensure work is completed to a high standard of quality and safety. Nightshift working is required.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with the laying, raking, levelling, and finishing of asphalt materials
• Support the operation of surfacing plant, tools, and equipment
• Carry out site preparation and general labouring duties before, during, and after surfacing works
• Work closely with the Foreperson and wider surfacing squad to complete projects safely and efficiently
• Conduct routine checks and basic maintenance of plant, equipment, and PPE
• Follow site instructions, safe systems of work, and company procedures at all times
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment
• Report any safety concerns, incidents, defects, or near misses promptly
• Work flexibly across different sites and shifts, including night work where required
